The high school audience at Lowell was one of the best-behaved student bodies I’ve had the luck to address, and there were 4,500 of the youngsters in all , . ♦ Rotary turned out a polite and patient crowd, too . . . and Mr. H. U. Quinn, of the commercial college, drove about town* showing and explaining the remarkable and original features of this old mill city ♦ * , What interested me most is the system of canals. Fast-flowing water, taken from the Merrimack river, furnishes power for mills and fluid for scouring wool.It interested me to hear from Mr. Quinn that business schools no longer place any stress upon penmanship, Most of them do not even attempt to teach the subject.it is not because businessmen do not like a legible hand, but because so many mechanical devices have entered into business office routine. The commercial school has to crowd on ail steam to prepare its students for office work, and penmanship has gone by the board because other subjectsseem more important. It’s inevitable, but regrettable fromthe standpoint of the older folk, whowere taught that a fair hand was an important accomplishment.I note in my daily correspondence that the most legible hand-written letters come from older people. Those who were trained in the oldSpencerian system, and the younger ones who learned the simple and legible Palmer modification of that system, write so that anyone majr read. Many who learned the vertical system in the schools of a slightly later era have not been able to keep up legibility under the stress of daily life and rapid production.Peonies in great jars and tubs were being spread about the lobby of the Algonquin the ether day, when 1 stepped inside.Mrs. Frank Case, wife of the proprietor, was managing the job in person.Queries brought out that the flowers come from the Case home at Sag Harbor,A quaint old whaling town is SagHnrHr»r A! if inu’arH fVin {lt;ar rvf
