FACM EIGHT MOUNT DORA TOPIC THURSDAY. .TUNE 14, 1962LAWNBOWLINGBy SCOTTY and the REPORTING COMMITTEEWhat a fine job of pinch-hittintf, as he called it, Alex Whiteside, under the nom de plume “Lex,” did for us during our absence in the West checking up on our families in their new homes in Omaha, Neb., and Lubbock, Tex. Many thanks, Alex. All of you will recall that he handled the column early in his presidential term before enlisting the present scribe, so that he brought experience as well as talent to this space.I'lpXld speaking of mattersdential, we have heard from theSenders at Benton Harbor, Mich., that their first month there has gotten them pleasantly shaken down, with visits from children and grandchildren, and, for Mabel,“hospital work, church work, some club work, and dinner bridge.”Mabel and the writer have a longstanding feud on her arrangementof her cards when laying down a dummy hand, and she adds: “Scotty, this is about as upside down as arranging cards. I hope you can figure out the sequence.”The trouble with her placement of cards isn’t a matter of sequence, which is admirable, but that they are so put down that, while she can read them readily, her partner (pleasantly this reporter on occasion) is less favored. Months of advice have brought no improvement, and there have been intimations, when we have complained. that for our kind of play we might as well be blindfolded. We have been so busy getting the place in shape since our return that bowling has suffered, although we did get down to the rinks one afternoon and found Art Jewell and Dave Britton there. They taught us a game that was entirely new to us, all three rolling four bowls, with separate scores, only the first, second, third, and fourth bowls counting on a basis of 4, 3, 2, and 1—14 ends. For further details, see them, or Harry Borncr, the one spectator, for we’d be * drawn and quartered before we’d add a word. Fortunately, Alex gave us a report onfurther activity, which we quote:Monday evening, 24 bowlers wererained out after the fifth end.Tuesday and Wednesday, bowlingat its best, with no bugs whatever.Thursday, several who have never tried evening bowling turned up to replace others who had left fornorthern climes. About two dozen bowlers each evening. Friday and Saturday rain. Departures: Ethel and George Hicks left last Tuesday for their Vermont summer home. Edith and Val Wetmore and Mabel and Clayton Cook will be on their way north when this is published.Another of our old timers, Elizabeth Moynelo (Mrs. Harold C. Moynelo) who had been a member of the club for 12 years, passedaway last week. It grieves us to note the passing of this fine friend and companion.”Mary and Chet Webster write us from Oneida, N. Y., with their usual happy enjoyment of things and people, and with information that they will be at 1103 Palmetto Drive this Fall and asking that their best wishes be given to their friends at the Club. This is hereby done, and a fine summer to you Websters in that lovely section of New York State. On our return home we found a delightful letter of “Springtime Greetings” from Dr. Bruce and Mabel Gill, sent to friends in place of more usual holiday messages which numerous pressures prevented. We had barely time to thank these good next-door neigh-
