DEATH WISH 111After having been a witness to Hollywood's latest effluence. I’ve arrived at the conclusion that if Shakespeare had been a 20th Century screenplay writer, he would have written a Hamlet II and III.Death Wish III Is one such example of Hollywood's almost criminal practice of perpetual sequel making. Like •Rocky', ’Superman'. ’Jaws' and endless other I's, M's and Ill's, Death Wish III clearly illustrates the average movie maker's total lack of consideration for those of us who till believe in the art in film making is not dead.In this, Bronson's latest monstrosity, as in his previous two monstrosities, he plays Paul Kersey, an urban, geriatric Rambo caught in a situation hand crafted to cater to the full extent of Mr Bronson's thespian abilities. Unfortunately. New York’s inclement weather precludes the painfully familiar bare chested battledress akin to the ultra-macho character he portrays. The film's scenario is as follows: Bronson returns to New York and is apprehended by the police. Faced with an Increasing crime wave, the local police chief is forced to cut loose the vigilante, with a mandate to clean up the streets - in the police chiefs words - “I want bodies on those slabs in the morgue tomorrow. The remainder of the film thus follows the familiar pattern of cowboys and Indians - Bronson stalks his prey, the scum of the earth, blowing them to kingdom - come with his heavy calibre Wilbey pistol.Despite the immediate consequences for art as a whole, it is quite possible to enjoy the insubstantial storyline and lack of acting or artistic quality in any form. The film’s basis has obviously been derived from the rationale of most 'X-Rated' films; the same thing repeatedly done with a variety of people in different ways and with varied results is sure to tide over an audience for at least 90 minutes.Anyone who’s ever had a car stolen, a handbag snatched or a house burgled is bound to identify with Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) and I'm sure anyone who has ever stolen a car, snatched a purse or burgled a house will identify with the scores of antisocial types who enter the crosshairs of Bronson’s 38.As far as gratuitous sex and violence goes, Deathwish III is somewhat malnourished. Those who feel the need for that style of material should watch Willesee. The only truly disturbing aspect of Death Wish III is its conclusion. New York is gutted by fires caused by rioting hordes and Bronson saunters off into the sunset, portending only one disastrous consequence for the world - Death Wish IV.Michael Robertson
