Nothing ever happens!” bleated Sandy Wilcox, the bored teenager in the film My American Cousin. But a lot has happened to Margaret Langrick, who brought Sandy to life in the hit Canadian movie.Langrick was 12 when she made her debut. Now, at 16, she’s so busy she’s dropped out of Grade 10 in Red Deer, Alta., to concentrate on acting.Langrick won a Genie for best actress for her portrayal of the Okanagan Valley girl with a crush on her glamorous visiting cousin. Now she’s appearing in Harry and the Hendersons, produced by StevenLANGRICKSpielberg. She plays Sahara, a Seattle teenager who begrudgingly shares the family home with Harry, a 10-foot Sasquatch.Langrick has also done two episodes of the television adventure series Danger Bay, with a third scheduled for this summer. In addition, she’s done a four-hour Disney mini-series called Earthstar Voyager, the pilot episode of Fox Broadcasting’s 21 Jump Street, and had a role as actor Peter Coyote’s daughter in the TV movie Sworn to Silence.“I didn’t really have time for school,” says Langrick. “I might pick it up with a tutor, but right now I’m really busy working.”Langrick’s parents are divorced. She has her own apartment in Vancouver’s upscale False Creek area.“She’s not estranged from her parents,” her mother, Helena Langrick, said in an interview Friday.“She’s in the fortunate position of being somewhat independent, and it’s delightful for any teenager.” Helena Langrick accompanies Margaret on production locations because under U.S. Screen Actors’ Guild regulations, the girl is considered a minor.Langrick quit school last fall after an exhausting summer shooting Harry and the Hendersons.Doing scenes with Harry was a bit odd, she admits. Harry was played by Kevin Peter Hall, a seven-foot, two-inch actor inside a Big-foot costume. Harry’s facial expressions were controlled by makeup men with remote control switches.“It wasn’t really a problem, because Harry seemed so human,” Langrick says. “You couldn’t help but feel that Harry really was a person.”She saw the finished version of the film at its premiere in Seattle. It was a nerve-wracking experience.“Next time I want to see it where there aren’t a bunch of people waiting to talk to me about it. Maybe I’ll see it alone, or with my boyfriend.”rlI Shortgrasslimo Q -
