Winnipeg Free Ptoss, Monday, June 7,1982 123 The old warriors of Starship Enterprise are back oft the big screen In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Kirk, Spock, Dr. McCoy and the rest of the crew are in dandy fighting tom in voyage, The special effects are daatfing and to the central story of good and evil forces clashing in the galaxies maintains both pace and humor throughout most of the movie. The only sour note stems from the heavily melodramatic subplots involving the friendship between Kirk and Spock and Kirk's confrontation with the son he’s never known. The movie thrusts us once again into the 23rd century somewhere in man’s final frontier—space. Aboard the Enterprise, trainee Saavik (Kirstie Alley) is at the helm. The passenger-transpor-ter Kobayashi-Maru has been disabled so, to rescue its passengers, Saavik must take the ship into hostile territory.LAXsnew ■HMMMnaaHnnHn Movies wmmtsm wMgmMWmmmz® Leonard i Klady Tests mettle Approaching the crippled liner, the Enterprise is attacked by Klingon war planes. However, the apparent deaths of Spock (Leonard Nimby) and Dr. McCoy (DeFofest Kfelley) are only for show, this is an exercise designed by Starfleet to test the mettle of recruits. Supervising the Kobayashi-Maru test is A’dmirai Kirk (William Shatner) the only man who’s ever beaten the impossible game situation. Kirk has been put in dry dock and can barely3 reading daily, adio, TV and town. MATCMMAKKR CLUB Proven method for single, widowed, divorced, unattached people to meet. All ages welcome. Why be alone? Meanwhile, on a distant moon, Chekhov (Walter Koenig) and Terrell (Paul Winfield) have stumbled on to a colony in an otherwise arid orb. the lead* is Khan (Ricardo Montaiban), die renegade exiled by Kirk IS years earlier in a Star Trek television episode. Khan and his rebel band take command of the Reliant, TerreU’s.shlp, and uncover information on the Genesis top-secuTity project Although intended as a peaceful scientific experiment, Genesis can be a deadly weapon in the wrong hands. Khan plans to use it to destroy Kirk. The premise of Star Trek II has the necessary elements for a solid adventure yarn. Khan is a formidable adversary driven by a blinding obsession to take revenge on his old enemy. Kirk, supervising a routine training mission, must come out of retirement to quell the madman and save the universe. Shatner’s Kirk opens up considerably from the strictly business type best remembered from the Enterprise’s three television seasons. There’s a wonderfully playful quality among Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley as the ship’s top officers. The film-makers of Star Trek II fall just short of producing an ideal screen vehicle for the old adventurers. The new recruits don’t intrude on the main players’ territory. However, the introduction of Dr. Marcus (Bibi Besch) and her son David (Merritt Butrick), the scientists in charge of Genesis, evolves awkwardly from a plot key to a melodramatic diversion. For those concerned that a new movie Star Trek would further erode the entertainment value of the series, The Wrath of Kahn will be a pleasant surprise. Uke Scotty, the film-makers still have a few kinks to iron out in the mechanics before they produce a smooth ride but, until then, may they live long and prosper.
