p-10—THE GASTONIA GAZETTE, Fri., June 7, 1968Spring Is GreatBy DOUG SESSOMSThe .Buffalo Springfield is definitely one of the most important groups to .come out of tiie Los Angeles area. The music is beautiful, the words meaningful and the harmony and arrangements intricate and musical. This is definitely one group that has not received the acclaim that is due.All of this is quite evident in their second Atco album, ’'Buffalo Springfield Again/* The cover of the album is, in itself,, interesting. Ojiv theback cl' the cover, the Springfield wriLe: We wish to thank the following friends, enemies ■ and people we don't know from Adam for their influence and inspiration. The dedication is to Barry Friedman.”On the cover, the Buffalo Springfield list the writers, singers, and instruments ptay-ed in each song. Side one begins with “Mr. Soul,” a tune that received heavy airplay Lrl California but never did much anywhere else. Written by-Neil Young, one ot’ the Buffalo, he also does the vocals. The other members of the group are Steve Stills, Dewey Martin, Richie Furay, and BrucePalmer.Even those who hate country and western have to like “A Child’s Claim To Fame/* a c/w twanger written by Furay. It is catchy and latch- • es itself onto the most avid c/w hater. Richie is an easygoing guy whose dynamite, personality projects to every audience. His talents arethree fold: he writes, plays one of the best rhythm guitars in the nation, and belts out a powerful song.Steve Stills has received more attention than any other member of the group. A long time friend of Peter Tork (one of the Monkees), Steve is the leader of the group,. sings second lead vocal andsecond lead guitar, Steve wrote and sang the group’s first national hit, “For What It’s Worth,” and composed four of the songs on Buffalo Springfield Again.” One of the songs, “Everydays,” while not too impressive, is still worthy oil some recognition.Neil Young’s Expecting To Fly” is one of the bast songs on the album. The tunc begins with what appears to be the sound of air airplane coming closer and closer. With Richie’s help, Neil’s vocals are somewhat unbelievable.Steve Stills’ “Bluebird” is up there with “Expecting To Fly/' This was the Springfield's second hit single, if you can call it a hit. The song should have been number one, but Lhe public didn’t buy 1L. This is not understandable as the song is better then mast on the market.Noil's guitar solos are certainly something in this song!. This version of “Bluebird/’ longer than the single, has a break in the middle, resuming with banjo-pickkg andmaking one wonder if it’s anolher song. Steve comes in with the vocals to finish and ■ establish the song as “Bluebird”Side -one is great but side two is absolutely fantastic. It would be very, very difficult to chose the best track on side two as all of them are too much. At aiiy rate, it begins with “Hung Upside Down,” Steve Young’s fuzz guitar gives that sound that makes this song unique. The powerful vocals also ease the song through three minutes and 24 seconds of unsurpassed listening , , . definitely one of the Springfield’s best songs to date.Richie Furay is remarkable! On side one he came up with a country and western twanger to beat them all, and now hetops that with a beautiful love bullard, Sad. Memory.” The trumpet in the background helps to set the mood of the song. Richie sounds as though he just lust his best girl, which is precisely what the sqpg is about. *Richie amazes everyone as he goes from c/w, to ballad, to “blues rock” in “Good Time Boy/' Dewey Martin really shows himself with his drumming. Although neglected throughout most of the albpm, Dewey has a chance to show what he can do in Good Time Boy.” It \a quite a song. At limes it sounds like a big band,a rock 'a' Roll band, or a blues band ... a swinging sound.• This is Sieve’s second song on the album. “Rock and Roll Woman” is especially prominent because of the harmony, guitar playing, and electric piano. It’s depressing to think that such a deserving sang went unnoticed.“Broken Arrow” begins with what, sounds like a live concert with girls screaming for the Buffalo.Neil goes into the vocals . that tell of the aftermath of a pop concert and an ' Indian holding a broken arrow. Next, comes a crowd of “boos” followed by more vocals leading up to the Indian holding the broken arrow. Drums, talk of death, and still more about the Indian round out the song. While a little hard to understand, the song is very beautiful. While this album isn’t exactly new and went practically unnoticed when released it deserves recognition. More than that, the Buffalo Springfield deserves more recognition than practically any other group in the nation. They prove themselves on “Buffalo Springfield A g ai 11/* an album that is almost a masterpiece of writing, per formance, and production.
