...College of IPhysicians accepts LobsteinDr Phil I-obsteln, son of Mrs. Opal ijobsteln of Brownwood and the late Dr Henry I/obstein. a 1957 graduate of Brownwood High and a noted cardiologist, has been accepted into the prestigious American College of PhysiciansDr lxbstfin, who has been practicing in San Antonio since 1974, will be opening a new office in the Medical Plaza Bldg in Fort Worth this monthlast year, Dr I,obstetn was one of the participants, along with internationally famous heart surgeon Dr Michael DeBakey, at the Texas Union symposium. “The Heart and •Heart Disease, held at the Unlveresity of Texas at AustinDuring his presentation, Dr.lobstein, who is also a board member of the American Heart Assn., said, “Your genetic predispositions seem to be the greatest factor in determining whether you will have heart disease, but that doesn't mean you cannot reduce your risks.''Exercise, diet, hypertensioncontrol, giving up smoking and even personality adjustments can help in varying degrees in reducing the risk of arterial disease leading to heart attack and stroke, according to thedoctorDr. l,obsteln said that “heart attack and stroke are becoming more and more common among young people-28, 29, 30 and 31.Actually, shortly after puberty is when heart disease starts.He said that a history of family members with heart attacks during their 40s or even their 50s should alert a person to the possibility of being prone to heart disease.Before menopause, he said, women are much less likely than men to develop heart disease. After menopause, however, “they double and catch up.In making his seminar presentation, Dr. Lobstein relied heavily on a 14-year study made of the entire population of the town of Framingham, N.Y.1 pop 5,100).He said the incidence of high cholesterol in the individual had a strong correlation with heart attack However, he noted that obesity does not necessarily have a strong relationship unless it exists in conjunction with high cholesterol.Smoking, said Dr lobstein, has a definite relation to heart disease, arterial disease, strokes and lung cancer.I don't try to talk people out of smoking, hs said, “I Just want them to know what they are doing if they continue.Citing the Framinghan study, the doctor said, smoking double* one's likelihood of heart attack Add high cholesterol, and it doubles again; add hypertension to the others, andit doubles againLooking at personality modification as a factor to reduce the likelihood of heart attack, he said, the person who is running late, blares the car horn and shouts at the traffic jam is more likely a candidate for a heart attack than is the person who worries less about schedules or who leaves for meetings early to avoid a tight situation.There is some evidence that you can do something about your personality, he said, adding that people who are less likely to have a heart attack are not, repeat not, non-achievers— they just go about their achievements In other ways.During his years at Brownwood High, Dr. Lobstein became noted for his golf prowess and in 1964, at the age of 15. became the youngest player ever to win the city golfing championship.That same year, he advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Golf Association's Junior tourney In California before beingeliminated by another young golfer, Al Geiberger, who has since gone on to become one of the steller performers ofprofessional golfing.Dr. lobstein went on toWilliston Academy and YaleUniversity where he was president of the golf team. Aftergraduating from BaylorMedical School In 1966, he Interned at Dallas* Parkland Hospital and also spent a year at London's noted Hammersmith Hospital In 1973-74 before opening his practice in San Antonio in 1974.The doctor is married to the former Donna Fulwtler of Dallas.
