Joe Bates Smith\Writes Songs ForAll-Soldier Show[ISgt. Joe Bates Smith, son of Mrs. Edward Windi'seh, Columbus-av, stationed at the Alpena Army«Air Base, Alpena, Mich., and associate editor of the Alpena Bugle base official publication, has writ, ten a number of songs for the all-soldier minstrel show “On the Beam” which was presented at the Maltz theater in Alpena last month.Eight songs.were included in the show and all but one were written by Sgt. Smith especially for the performance. Smith’s numbers are “Fanny of Alpena Air Base,” “The K. P. Swing Shift Blues,” “Get Out the Hip Boats, Charlie,” “Three Point Two,” “Goodbye Charlie, Goodbye ” “Every Girl Loves a Guy in a Uniform,” “The Hutment Song,” and the title song “On the Beam.”Prior to entering the army Sgt. Smith was engaged as a regular radio script writer and wrote for many of the biggest radio shows on the air. He has written two|| plays, “The Devil Takes a Bride” which played at the Cort theater, New York City, and “Fire Across the Sky” which has been sold in London for Leslie Banks. He was about to, leave for a movie contract when he was called in the army, and he was recently promoted to the rank of sergeant.The Sandusky man started his theatrical and radio career as an actor the same year he was graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor,
