‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan’
The Starship Enterprise has soared into view in a big screen mission that outdistances the 1979 film, Star Trek, The Motion Picture.” Though Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” lacks the grandiose sweep and inflated budget of the first film, it is infinitely richer in charac* terizations, and its succinctly drawn storyline manages to be both riveting and warmly affecting.
This time around it is people - their love, vengefulness and friendship - that dominates. Directed by Nicholas Meyer, Star Trek 11 finds William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley and the rest of the familiar crew delivering enjoyable performances that abound in nuances that reveal a longtime comaradarie.
In addition to old friends, “Star Trek II” finds an old enemy taking deadly aim at the Enterprise and Kirk, Ricardo Montalban reprises his TV role of Khan, a 20th-century renegade with rippling biceps and a superintellect. The result is a battle of wits and starships that is a boon for all audiences, not just Trekkies.
