SOLDIER’S BODY IFOUND AT THEROGERS HOUSEMr. Haner Makes Discovery F While Ditching InGardenc-After lying' for more than fifty years in an unknown grave, the i-e- ( k mains of one of the heroes who went | si down to death in the series of de»per- | slt; ate battles along the Emmitsburg ! w road, was discovered on Tuesday af- I e-. ternoon. j fsThe find was made by Mr. ! aiS11:Charles Haner. who now owns and! blt;ioccupies the Rogers House. A couple of weeks ago he was putting a tile drain in the garden, and going somewhat deeper than the usual plowing depth, came upon evidences j bi of a grave. He did not investigate ! ir until Tuesday, when in company with j w several men he found the skeleton of aiecP-elt;a;roL-yacitXaa man about two feet below the surface. The bones are very7 much decayed, but the larger ones of the arms and leg's, the knee caps and a j i. few other of the heavier bones were easily recognizable. The skull was intact when in the ground but began \ to crumble after being removed. The j y lower jaw, containing a full set of j ir very iai’ge teeth was in the best state 111Iof preservation. I icThere is not the slightest doubt |I that the remains are those of a sol-j dier who was killed in the battle. Found among the bones was a battered bullet, and probably the one that killed him: the remnant of a belt and bayonet scabbard, a brass button with the old English letter “I,” the fragment of a cap box with a half dozen percussion musket caps,! Slt; and a number of white porcelain shirt buttons. Unfortunately none of these are sufficient to identify the remains as being those of a Union or j to11tlAtccinlt;inwarecararccscConfederate soldier. The location at which it was found will add nothing to this uncertainty for dozens of men of both sides were killed in the vicinity of the Rogers house. The place where the body was found is near the center of the present garden. At the time of the bat- j tie a stable fronted on the Emm its- j fr burg road at this place and this soldier was probably buried at the west side of the stable.Mr. Haner intends to place the bones in a box and rebury them in the garden, pending any other arrangement that may be made for their final interment.futiiV£bi: or-thw:?are
