As the fight became warmer, people from Odon went to the aid of the laborers, and the combined forces drove the Linton men from the field. The Linton crowd left and said they would return with a force of 500 men, when the laborers would join the union or the work on the roads would stop. The laborers on the roads demanded an increase of pay from the contractors, which was refused, and some of them decided to join the union and force the contractors to come to terms. Many of the laborers refused to organize, and those in favor of it took the difficulty up with neighboring organizations.
