France, and commission- t ed Second Lieutenant, Signal v Corps Reserve. He assisted in organizing and operating the first t radio intelligence section of the ^ Signal Corps in France, which engaged in the location of enemy radio stations and interception of j their messages. For this work he r received a citation from Chief Sig- j nal Officer of the American Ex- -] peditionary Forces for ‘ especially c excellent and meritorious service. cMr. Sterling srved as a radio s operator in the Merchant Marine and in 1922 entered commercial employment as a marine radio inspector. He entered the Federal service as a radio inspector in the Bureau of Navigation, Department of Commerce in 1923 and has continuously engaged in the en- j forcement of radio laws and regu- I lations since that date. IMr. Sterling was appointed In- J spector in Charge of the 3rd Radio District. Federal Radio I Commission with headquarters at Baltimore, Maryland, in 1935. He ,was transferred to Washington, j) D. C., as Assistant Chief of the Field Division. Engineering De-partment, Federal Communications Commission, in June 1937. « He was appointed Chief. National Defense Operations Section. Field Division, Enginering Department, 1 July 1. 1940. and has served in that capacity until the prsentci (i tc 1He is the author of The Radio i Manual”—(3 editions)- which is , ; recognized and used extensively 1 as a standard textbook on radio communication equipment and procedure by radio schools and for government training purposes and as a reference book by collegesand universities.Mr. Sterling is a member of the Institute of Radio Engineers. He resides in Stoneleigh, Baltimore, County. Maryland.
