By Shelly BirkeloGazette Staff__Saturday, June 10, will mark a first for Charlofte Holcomb’s dance school.Her students of almost 20 years have been giving yearly dance recitals, but never before have a mother and daughter danced on stage together.This year, Paula and Erin Gordon, 3319 Van Allen Road, will perform “It All Depends on You,” a classic soft-shoe tap dance.“I thought it would be nicefor them to do a number together,” Holcomb said, and “Paula seems to be enthused about it.”“I wasn’t sure it would work,” Paula said, adding: “She’s the teacher; I’m not.”The Gordons will be among some 150 other students to perform in the 6 p.m. recital at Marshall Middle School, which is open to the public.I A six-year dance student, Erin has taken lessons from Holcomb for the past fourPaula, 40, participates in a class for mothers.Paula, who is a marriageand family counselor at Applied Mental Health Associates, studied dance as a child, but not as seriously as she wishes she would have. “I wish I had stayed with it, because I love it so much. Memorizing steps is a lot harder now,” she added.Weekly, Erin studies jazz, tap and gymnastics under Holcomb’s instruction. The 10-year-old Clinton Elementary School student enjoys watching old Fred Astaire movies with her mother.For the past two months the Gordons have been rehearsing in their basement. Recorded music emits from a cassette player, which sits on top of the washing machine.One. Two. Three. Four. And they’re off. Dancing across the room, the duo,dressed in matching black and white polka dot and striped costumes, spin and twirl as the toes and heels of their shoestap with the beat.“It got to be more excitingonce I learned the whole thing,” said Paula who was first taught the number by Holcomb, then turned around and instructed Erin, at home.“It felt good to be able to teach something to Erin. She memorized the steps without difficulty and has worked hard, her mother said.Paula enjoyed putting all the steps together. “That’s the fun part,” she said.The recital gives the students something to work toward and look forward to, Paula said.“I like dancing with my mom,” said Erin, who is familiar with dancing in front of audiences. During the past four years she has made eight public appearances.Dancing is not the only interest the Gordons share. The two also have participated in church activities, Girl Scout events and enjoy shopping together.
