Retiring North PrincipalNorth High School’s commencement Thursday night was special not only for the 233 seniors who graduated but also for David P. Barnes, the school’s first principal and principal of Eau Claire high schools for 32 years, who retires at the end of the school year.In presenting a portrait of Barnes to Class Advisor Donald Pratt to be placed in the school’s Hall of , Americans, Assistant Principal Dale E. Krammes said Barnes’ leadership, counsel and decisions have been unmatched.In presenting the seniors for graduation, Barnes hoped the idealists among them would “thrive and prosper in your efforts to promote a more sane, a more humane and a more peaceful society.Social Concerns “May you remain steadfast in your social concerns with wisdom and grace, until one day you touch on a sense of concord, harmony and inner peace.” For other members of the class, the school’s first principal hoped they would all start their post-high school careers at $12,000 a year.In charging the seniors, Karl F. Moessner, school board president, said he hoped their education will reinforce their hopes, amplifies their reason and give them a sense of the eternal dignity of man.“The world you now enter badly needs both your vigorous activism and your fundamental decency,” he said. “Do not let disillusionment or setbacks deprive you of the satisfaction of making a difference in thatworld.School Supt.
