The commime members are like an innocent blemish that modern urban society has yet to wipe out with its dull, oppressive cosmetology.Miss Wertmullcr follows (he characters through their lives picking at (heir errant hopes and dreams, (heir frequent failures, with an eye for nuance that strikes like a falcon ripping into rabbits. One is tempted to say that Miss Wertmullcr’s style is sadistic glee if it were not for the fact that she sees, and shows, (he pathos aj (he foundation of her harsh comedy.One character slaves to have a house of his own so that he can marry the simple country girl heloves. But as the story progresses, she becomes increasingly “sophisticated and ends up material-istiely wanting more than he will ever be able to provide. Another character becomes a thief whose false pride is undercut by h i s desperate running. Another character, who is the poorest of the lot, marries only to have his wife give birth first to twins and then quintuplets.“Alt Messed Up” has the 5ame rich mixture of politics, economics and human frailty that matte Miss Werlmulier's other films such a delight for art film audiences but here there is more subtlety.
