Higgins Heads Labor Day Celebration HereJoe Higgins, Logansport native and nationally known television personality, will be the star attraction for the Labor Day celebration which will be held in this city from Saturday Sept.5, through Monday, Sept, 7.The activities are being sponsored by the local AFL-CIQ Labor Council.Higgins will serve as master of ceremonies for a beauty pageant at Lincoln Junior High School at S p.m. Sept. 5, which yiill begin the three-day celebration.Participants in the pageant,open to the public, will be selected by the 33 locals of the labor council in Logansport.Entrants will be judged on the basis of street length dress, one-piece bathing suit, floor length formal and an interview by Higgins.The winner will be crowned queen and will reign over the weekend activities. Local merchants will supply gifts for the queen and other contestants.Following the pageant, a reception and dance will be held ' in the Labor Hall on Market St.Judge Norman Kiesling, Chambeb of Commerce Executive William Ray, Police Chief Michael Long, Mrs. Gay Kant-zer and Mrs. Kathleen Williams will be the judges.Activities Sept, 6 will includegolf matches, picnics and family get-togethers, with the opportunity for Logansport residents to meet and talk with Higgins.Higgins will be grand marshall for the Labor Day parade which will begin 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7. Bands, marching units and floats will form on Erie Avenue and move through 'the city to Riverside Park, where honored guests will be introduced and parade trophies will be presented.An open house during the evening at the Labor Hall will conclude the weekend celebration.Higgins, a veteran actor, is best-known for his portrayal of a southern sheriff on an automobile television commercial.He took the part of Nils the blacksmith on the television series, The Rifleman, and has appeared on other TV programs and in numerous motion pictures.Gene Kaufman and Ova Huff are co-chairmen of the Labor Day committee.Pageant tickets will be available free of charge after August 1 at Hendrickson’s Motor Sales, Inc., The.
