Thursday, July 30,1901HISTORY ABOUNDS AT MORRIS' HOMEMorris.Another bedroom contains the “Fess Parker bed” where Fess’ father, John, was bom. Fess Parker’s uncle, Rev. Earl Lightfoot’s, land joined the Morris’ farm on the Leon River. John Parker lived on the Reverend’s place at one time. His wife hated the bedoutbuilding and caked with mud when John gave it to LuElle. She has transformed the old dark wood into a beautiful antique blue. Hanging in the room is a picture of the famous race horse Dan Patch which hung in her grandmother’s house. She has been unable to date this picture. Displayed on thewall is one of the original Davy Crockett caps and herson Curtis’old horn. Hangingfrom the dresser is an old,hand-carved cane.Moving to the kitchenprovides more for the visitor.Jud Hanson’s mother’s butterbowl, which set in a windowcooler with water and ragswrapped over it to stay cold,sits atop an old icebox which isin excellent condition. Alongone wall is shelving,displaying all types of chinaincluding Jud Hanson’sdepression glass, KathleenFreeman’s square platedishes from England, pottery,her grandmother’s cutglass,her own Virginia Rose china,heavy glass goblets, and apewter ice cream dish fromHarmon’s Drug Store. Underthe dishes, sitting on the floor,is Aunt Effie Short’s butterchum, an old rolling pill and aportion of a colander.In the hall there is a cranktelephone purchased for $1.50.At one time, J. B., Finis Sides,and Jewell Mathis owned thephone line out their way.When Mr. Stephen purchasedthe De Leon phone company,he bought their stock and installed dial phones for all of them.Across the back of the house is a screened-in porch whereJ. B. and Luelle spend many of their summer hours. A small iron bedstead can befound here.Outside there is a hand water pump from the old Harmon house cistern. A friendly squirrel scurries down the tree for a drink of water, or perhaps a pecan.It’s a house filled with pictures and memories and of people, both of the present and of those gone on - on Austin Street in De Leon, occupied by LuElle and J. B. Morris.and it was stored in anTHIS SAFE............once belonged to Mrs. Jim Joiner and holdsmany items of the past in the Morris home.
