MANftAdmits That Aylward Shifted From Senatorsh'p Aspirations Because of Danger From Too Many Ambitious Office SeekersIn a statement Issued from Washington on Wednesday, Joseph E. Davies urges the democrats of Wisconsin to defeat Judge John C. Karel for the nomination for governor and nominate John A. Aylward for that place and Senator Paul O. Hustlng for'United States senator.Mr.i Davies admits that he has been opposed to Karel from the first although he asserts that he voted for him two years ago wh^n the Judge was nominated for governor by thedemocrats. Mr. Davi o objections to Judge Karel, a gr. jii by ■ him, are three: First, to his record years ago in the legislature, when he followedIthe dictates of the democratic caucus; second, because he opposed the income tax law two years ago; third, because some republicans signed his nomination papers.Karel, Davies says, does not represent the democracy of Wisconsin either in his, record, Ills associations or his convictions. Mr, Davies says that if the democratic tarty should• 'Iwin in Wisconsin this year, and hebelieves yet there is reason to believe It may, then the man elected governor “should be a man whose associations are beyond question.” The man so elected, says Mr. Davies, must on the one hand stand for retrenchment in state expenses and on the other a retrenchment which will not affect the things which are good and have made the state great in the last twelve years against which the people are now crying out.“The democratic organization of this state,” says Mrj^Davies, “has been progressive and of the Wilson type. The progressive democrats controlling the organization in the state were behind the Wilson candidacy two years ago.”Mr. Davies admits that the danger to the “progressive organization” is conflicting ambitions among the leaders and goes on to show how the ambitions on the progressive side here were adjusted by bringing John A. Aylward out for governor andgiving the nomination for United• . \States senator to Senator Husting.
