Lund Mania tournament a whopperNorth Eastman duo net top spot in first annual fishing event in PinawaBv Arlene DavidsonThe first Canadian Lund Mania Fishing Tournament held July 20 in Pinawa was a rousing success for participants and fishing fans alike.The well known boat manufacturer has been hosting a Lund Mania tournament annually since 2009 in New York Mills, Minnesota where their headquarters are located.The North American event has brought master anglers from far and wide and Ryan Sproule with the Lund marketing division, was one of a group of organizers that felt it was time to host a Canadian tournament.Working with Sproule on the organizing committee were Steve Maclnnis of Ventures North/Global TV, Adrien Labarre of Winnipeg Sport and Leisure and Jason Gauthier who was the former owner of the Pinawa Motel and Master of Ceremony for the evening.Sproule commented on the warm welcome they received from Mayor Blair Skinner when they first approached him with the idea.“The community backed us from the hop. The LGD and the people of this town gave us all the resources, supports and venues we needed to make an event like this happen,” Sproule said.With 15 local teams taking part, the number of entries was limited to 50 Lund boats. Some world class angling teams travelled to Pinawa from B.C., Saskatchewan, Minnesota and North Western Ontario.Gauthier introduced the celebrities in the crowd that included Gary Roach, aka Mr. Walleye, Steve Mclnnis/Adventures North Fishing Show, Scott and Marty Glorvigen/Gemini Sport Marketing and Wired2Fish. Canadian Master Angler Alex Kessler, Craig Staponof CJOB's Let's Talk Fishing and PJockev Hall of Famer Bobby Hull.“Lund is proud to announce, that with your permission, we will be making this an annual event,” Gauthier said.The Canadian Lund Mania Fishing Tournament was held in conjunction with Pinawa’s 50th birthday celebration weekend.Lund Mania is a catch and release event. Each team liad a spotter who witnessed the fish being measured and photographed before release. The Top 3 of the 10 overall prizes included Lund boats, Mercury motors and Shoreliner trailer packages.The first prize package of a 16-foot Impact with a 60hp engine was valued at close to $30,000.To the delight of the crowd, the first two of the Top 10 teams were local boys. Doug Beatty and Gary Webner weighed in with a 13 -pound walleye, but were quickly bumped with a 13.05 pounder caught by Rick Lauze and Bill Murray.The Glorvigen brothers weighed in at 12.23, but both praised the people of Pinawa, wished them a big Happy Birthday and commented on the fabulous time thev had.Alex Kessler and son Darryl were the seventh team to hit the stage grabbing a strong lead with a 20.91 pound walleye.“This town is unreal. I’ve been to over 300 towns for fishing tournaments, and you are in the top 10,”Kessler said. “Pinawa is beautiful/you should be proud.
