Upper Des Moines Thursday, July 28, 1994Algona Senior Citizens have new location, double numbers quicklyEventually, the former ASCS suite on the north side will be converted into a large dining area and kitchen which will accommodate the Congregate Meal program and serve as a community meeting room.For Atgona's Active Senior Citizens, 1994 has been a banner year.After months of study, meetings. presentations, more study, more meetings, more presentations. the group finally secured a new home for itself, moving Into the former federal agriculture offices on North Main Street in February.Bud Anderson has served as chairman of the building committee throughout the longprocess of acquiring a new facility.Our paid membership has doubled since the move. Glen Graham, president of the organization. said In a recent interview. The group now numbers 79 members.“Active seems to be the key word In the organization's title — the seniors, along with severalcommunity volunteers, waded right in to remodeling the 7,200-square-foot facility, removing walls, re-wlrlng offices and making the restrooms handicapped-accessible.The transformation Is on-going, but the seniors are enjoying their new digs even as they continue to renovate. The facility houses a pool room, exercise room with a treadmill. Congregate Meal area, card room. Bingo area, reading nook and tables for small-group recreational activities.Eventually, the former ASCS suite on the north side will be converted Into a large dining area and kitchen which will accommodate the Congregate Meal program and serve as a community meeting room capable of seating 200 to 215 people. It will also contain storage and utility areas, as well as two additional handicapped-accessible restrooms.The seniors purchased the building for $128,000 from the Algona Building Corporation. They formerly met In the basement ofthe old public library building on Nebraska Street. The local chapter of the American Legion, which moved with the seniors from the library, also rents a small office there.This month, LaDonna Young ofAlgona took over as director of theCongregate Meals program, replacing Marge Baker, who retired. The program Is sponsored by Elderbrldge and catered by Hy-Vee.While the seniors continue their fund-raising efforts, which Include hosting a craft show and flea market In the near future, they are making full use of the current offerings In the new facility. One of the most popular activities, according to Graham, is card playing. Boy, they play cards like mad, he laughed.
