Some 113 4-H Boys, GirlsAttend County EncampmentSome 113 Brown County 4-H boys and girls attended the County 4-H Encampment held at the Lake Brownwood Baptist Encampment Grounds Thursday andFriday.A total of 53 boys. 60 girls and 22 adult leaders a.id parents registered for the camp Thursday Thursday morning.Camp officers were elected at an open assembly held In the encampment grounds tabernacle at11 a. m. Thursday.Those elected were Murray Milner Jr. and Billie Ann Stewart, camp chairmen. Bobby Nichols and Alma Deen Rankin, song leaders. Randall Grooms and Nel-da Murphy, reporters, and Kenneth Willet, Edwin Nichols and Marian Claiborne, camp inspectors.The camp had an electrical theme In conjunction with the 4-11 electrical program now in progress in the county.For more than a month beforethe county encampment, 4-H boysand girls had been building electric lamps. Some 33 of these lamps were entered in a lamp contest held at the camp Thursday afternoon.The lamp contest was divided into two dl v 1 s 1 o ns-decorative lamps and reading lamps. Medals were awarded to winners in both divisions.Winners in the decorative lamp division were Kathryn Brim, Brownwood, first; Jimmy Brim. Brownwood. second, and Marian Claiborne, Zephyr, third.Reading lamp division winners were Davis Sheliabareer. Brownwood, first, Bobby Nichols. Bangs, second, and Glenda Warnock, May, third.Lamp contest judges were Mrs. Katherine Hanson and Jim Gregory of the Texas Power Sc Light Co. and Mrs. Leonard McKinzie.festival judges were Mrs. Walter Dickens, Mrs. Lucy Shelton andMiss Nina Verser.During craft periods at the camp each 4-H member present assembled a 4-H wall pin-up lamp. The bases of the lamps were green four leaf clovers with the letter H” stenciled on each section of the leaves to form the traditional 4-H emblem.!!A sunrise service was conducted at the camp at 7 a m. Friday by Dr. H. H. Hargrove, pastor of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church.At 11 a.m. Friday. George Martin of Waco. Remington firearmsfield representative, presented arifle shooting demonstration emphasizing safety.County Agent Joe H. Rothe, who was in charge of food arrangements for the camp, said Saturday that the encampment w-as the best ever held in Brown County.Various committee members who handled arrangements for the camp were;REGISTRATION —Mrs. Frank Madison, Mrs. Grover Beakley, and Mrs. Harris Nichols, adult leaders.RECREATION—Mrs. J. W. Phillips and Mrs. F. W. Perkins, adult leaders, and Alma Deen Rankin, Nelda Murphy and Bobby Nichols, junior leaders.LAMP CRAFTS—A. R. Stewart, adult leader; Bob Turner and Jim Gregory, Texas Power Light Co., and Murray Milner Jr. and Billie Ann Stewart, junior leaders.SHRUB IDENTIFICATION — Mrs. Hugh Allcorn and Mrs. William Key, adult leaders, and Sue Tongate. Marion Clayborn and Sylvia Roach, junior leaders.CROP JUDGING—Don D. Decker. assistant county agent; Doyle Pittman, J. D. Canada, Garland Middleton and John Pepper, junior leaders.During study periods at the. camp 4-H boys studied crop judg- i ing and identification, and girls studied shrub identification. Contests were held after studies were completed, and medals were a-uarded to the winners.Crop judging w inners were Grover Beakley, Brookesmith, first, Randall Grooms, Bangs, second. I and Jerry Pittman of May. third.Winners in the shrub identification contest were Caroline Cole,Brookesmith, fiist, Betty Oden. Brookesmith. second, and Shir-lene Stubblefield, May. third.Recreational activities at the camp consisted of swimming periods, baseball, softball, washers, group games, and a costume partyand share-the-fun festival.At the costume party Thursdaynight, Shlrlene Stubblefield, dressed as an Indian witch-doctor, was awarded a prize for the funniest costume.At the share-the-fun festival held later Thursday night, each 4-11 club represented presented either a stunt or a showing of local talent.The Rrookesmith 4-H boys club won first place with a stunt entitled, The Skunk and the Preachers. Those who presented the stunt were Grover Beakley, Martin Stacy, Joe Oden. Robert William Connaway and Ernest Hibler.Costume party and share-the-funKIWANISSPONSIFOR BROWNWOOD Y!Friday will be Bicycle Day in Brownwood, as the Kiwanis Club sponsors it annual observance of a day for the youngsters of the city. A bicycle parade and races for boys and girls 15 years of age and under will be held.Chairman of Bicycle Day activities will he George Gibbons Smith, head of the Kiwanis Club boys and girls committee. Murray Milner is in charge of securing and presenting aw'ards. Prizes* to be donated by Brownwood business men. will be announced later this week.Prizes will be awarded to the boy and girl who ride the best decorated bicycles in the parade.Racing prizes will be awarded in two divisions. Those racing in the first division will be boys and girls under 12. Rac;ng in the second division will be boys and girls 12 and over.A trick riding contest with divisions the same as for racing will also be held.The races will be held at Coggin Park beginning at 5 p.m. Friday.
