-Cary Cooper Plans To Return Here For Fall Hunting’Gary Cooper, movie idol who was here for the Golden Canyon Days celebration, plans to return in the fall for a hunting trip with Safety Commissioner Hugh K. Potter.Potter said Cooper, an intimate friend since their high school days, left Sunday for California with the announced intention of returning in the fall.Cooper, Potter and Don Robertson, now a cook at the Placer hotel, used to go on hunting trips together as youths. Before Cooper left the. city Sunday, the movie star and Potter slipped into the kitchen of the Placer hotel coffee shop and chatted awhile with Robertson,After the parade Saturday, Cooper and Potter visited the old Cooper ranch at Craig.When Cooper and Potter rode in the Golden Canyon Days parade, it was the first time they had ridden together in almost 30 years.Potter told this amusing incident today of the parade: George Montgomery, another movie star who served as acting mayor of Helena for Golden Canyon Days, was astride a mount that wouldn’t neck rein.*Tm sure going to look foolish riding down the street holding the reins in both hands,” Montgomery told Cooper and Potter, “I won’t look like a cowboy doing that.”Cooper and Potter told Montgomery to stay between them and they would make certain the Montgomery horse stayed in line. As the line of inarch proceeded, Montgomery was able to hold the reins “like a cowboy” while the movie star and safety commissioner kept the mount in line.
