Beef barbecue mostly funPACKWOOD — Someone has to get up by 6 a.m. Sunday to drpp more titan 500 pounds of beef into a barbecue pit. However, that's about where the work ends and the fun begins during the 23rd annual Parkwood beef barbecue Aug. I-3*At about noon the beef is taken out of the pit and served with delectable dishes like corn on the ccb, beans a cd pota toes.The weekend events are sponsored by the Packwood Improvement Club and the proceeds, which in the past have averaged about $1,000, are dividedequally between the improvement club and (he Packwood Fire Department.The festivities include a barn dance Aug. 1, 3 p.m., in the community hail, with music by Johnny Mullins and Eddie Music.The Cowlitz Curtain Callers will perform a country and western variety theatre 8 p.m. Aug, l and 2, outdoors at the grade school or in (he community hall if it rains. There will also be an art show both days from 10a.m. tofi p.m. in the community hall.The barbecue will be held at the La Wis Wis campground, about five miles east of Packwood. Lasi year about 700 people feasted there. The fire department used the proceeds for firefighting and rescue equipment and the improvement club used the money to maintain the community hall.
