Asolo Grads On Broadway And TVIn 1972, one of the Asolo State Theater’s outstanding summer students was a young man named Thomas Hulce. During that summer, he appeared on the Asolo’s stage as the Newsboy in “The Time Of Your Life,” appeared in both “The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow” and “The King Stag,” and directed a brilliant studio production of “The Effects Of Gamma Rays On Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds” featuring the Asolo’s-now-Broadway’s superb Polly Holliday.Today, Tom Hulce is playing the leading role in the smash Broadway hit, “Equus,” tounanimous critical acclaim. How did he get to audition for such a major role? Polly Holliday recommended him.Also doing very well professionally is an ex-member of the Asolo Stuhe theater’s 1972 Equity Company, Justin Deas, a holder of the covered Asolo-FUS master of fine arts degree in professional acting. His Asolo roles that season included McCue in “The Front Page,” Sandy Tyrell in “HavFever” and Harry in “The Time Of Your Life.” Today, Justin is the star of the new television show, “Ryan’s Hope.”Asolo, The State TheaterCompany of Florida, is often called “the nation’s best acting company.,”Two other Asolo State Theater “grads” have gained coveted parts in “The Adams Chronicles” - very likely the largest and most significant original television drama series to be produced by noncommercial broadcasting in this country. A series of 13 hour-long weekly TV episodes which will dramatize the lives of America’s historic Adams family over four generations, Pamela Payton-Wright (Asolo1962-63) will play Louisa Catherine Adams and Albert Statton (Asolo 1963-68) will portray Thomas Jefferson. The Series currently is being taped in Long Island, New England and New York City, with final taping scheduled for some time in mid-Steptember.
