R-4 Chronicle-Telugrem Elyria, O., Sot., July 21, 1984Mellow rock, news and talk gain radio listenersTV newsShannon Jewell, writerBy KEN GOTTLIEB C-T TV WriterMellow rock WLTF and news-and-talk WJW are the hot stations in Cleveland radio, according to the spring Arbitron ratings released this week. Both made substantial audience gains from late March to late June, picking up ground on their chief competitors.WLTF JUMPED past WMJI among young adults, and pulled nearly even among older adults.Shortly before the ‘ rating period began, the station changed its call letters from WZZP and began identifying itself as “Lite Rock 106Management says the change helped clear up confusion on what type of music they play.WJW came from far down in the ratings to nearly pull even with chief rival WERE for the news-and-talk audience.WERE still leads in morning and afternoon drive time among older adults, but WJW pulled ahead in segments of the younger adult audience. Here’s what the ratings reveal about other stations:WMMS — Still the most successful station in Cleveland. Dominant among stations playing any type of rock music. In a market where a 10 percent audience share is considered good, WMMS got an incredible 27.9 of young adults in morning drive time.WDOK — Takes turns with WQAL leading the easy listening field. Slipped slightly from last rating period, but WQAL slipped even more, leaving WDOK comfortably ahead for now.WZAK — Another recent success story. Playing urban contemporary (black RB) music, it has turned back the competition of WDMT andmoved into the top five of Cleveland radio. Improved again this rating period.WGCL — Teen-oriented rock station held nearly steady during the rating period.Among stations geared to the younger audience, it still trails WMMS and WZAK.WBBG — Audience decreased slightly, but this Big Band nostalgia station is still the most successful AM outlet in town.WKSW - After WHK abandoned country music earlier thisyear, WKSW was the only country station for months. But that didn’t keep its audience share from dropping during the rating period.Just changed its call letters toWGAR-FM, but retained country music.WGAR-AM — Sister station of WGAR-FM (the old WKSW), just converted to country. In the rating period WGAR-AM was still playing the light-popular music known as adult contemporary. Audience shares decreased substantially from the previous period.WWWE — Playing a mix of adult contemporary and rock oldies, this struggling station showed signs of life, especially with older listeners. But Indians baseball and Pete Franklin continue to be the only success stories here.WHK — Hanked near thebottom in most categories, but was still getting its rock oldies format started during most of the rating period.* * *MAN WANTED — The producers of WKYC-TV Channel 3’s “AM Cleveland” are looking for one good man.Good, but not too good, that*is.It’s for a segment called “Male Makeover.” Experts will take an ordinary looking male and give him the deluxe fashion and grooming treatment to show what can be done with a little know-how and a fair amount of cash.Females are being asked to nominate someone by sending his photo, name, address and phone number to Male Makeover, 1403 E. Sixth St., Cleveland, Ohio 44114.Deadline is July 27, with the segment set to air Aug. 7.The lucky (?) man gets a freehair styling, color analysis and outfit from Higbee's.* * *UNCONVENTIONAL„ COVERAGE — Viewers watch-; ing the Democratic convention Wednesday night may have wondered why WEWS-TV Channel 5 and WJKW-TV Channel 8 abruptly dropped network coverage around midnight, just as the roil was about to be called for the presidential nomination. Both stations went to their nightly newscasts instead, missing a large chunk of the roil call.Station spokesmen said the convention was running much longer than scheduled.“It was a Catch-22 situation,” said Channel 8 news director Tony Ballew. “We were trying to get to our newscast But we didn’t want to interrupt the nominating speeches.“We just had to go with our news, or wind up running it at two in the morning.”
