Hurlbut, which was filmed by the Lasky company and opened in Chicago by the Strand Theater company at Orchestra Hall on Monday. But the leading role in the film version was not as full of opportunity as it was on the stage. There was so much action and so much good acting by the different members of the cast that Miss Crews had much to do to hold her own. She did it. The opportunities she grasped in the playing of the role did more to prove her capabilities than her actual wo k. Tom Meiglian showed up stronger than anyone else, partly because he appeared more often and partly because he is a strong personality and a good camera subject. The picture? it was up to the usual Strand standard, which means that it was an artistic thing to watch and a pleasant thing to sit through.* * *The theme of the story is mother love and loyalty in marriage, although the lady in the case came to love another man when she found that her husband was unfaithful to her and to himself.Anna is the wife of Robert Granger, secretary of the Gotham Bank, and mother ot his two sons. Granger, blinded by the glare of the White Lights, neglects his home and weakens his character. So when Cornelius Brady, a speculator, in danger of going to the wall, offers Granger a bribe to indorse a check for a laige sum, Granger turns crooked.Brady, Railing to pay, the bank is forced to liquidate, and Burton Temple, the president, is suspected of complicity in Granger’s fraud and indicted. Granger gets ten years, swearing his innocence. Anna, spurred by love for husband and children, determines to clear Granger’s name and gets a position as Temple’s secretary. While there evidence of Granger’s guilt comes to her. She destroys it, for her children’s sake. Then she comes to the realization that she loves Temple. Granger, escaping from prison, comes to the Temple home and begs his wife to aid him. He tells her he committed the crime for her arid she is ready to believe him. But a woman, who conies to sell evidenceof Granger’s gift to Temple, refutes his story. He is shot while attempting to escape and the way is left open for the love story of Temple and Anna.* G *Cyrena van Gordon, prima donna, richly endowed with a full, sweet voice, refused a loud demand for an encore of her first song, so we had to sit through the whole performance to hear her again. And Isaac van Grove, pianist, made you wonder that a mere piano could dosuch things as he made it do.* * • .The Harvard photoplay house, under the management of M. J. Mintz, has a doorman in white and perfect appointments. I went down there to see a picture I’d missed in the loop and wished they would move the Harvard nearer the heart of things.Movie BulletinWhere They Are Showing the Best PicturesJONES, LIN1CK SCHAEFER’SiOW!SALLE9 a. rva. to 11 p. m.Excellently Adapted, Tact-fuSly Handled, and Well Acted,Says Kitty KeSly in the TribuneTHE BLINDNESS OFVIRTUECOSMO HAMILTON’SStory in Motion Pictures,BRYANT WASHBURNALLNO CHILDREN ADMITTED.ALL STAR CAST|I*II;HE ARTSDirection Alfred HamburgerCOOLEST THEATRE IN THE CITY
