THE STAR: Thursday, July 20,1978Olympia Fields Girl to Vie For ‘Miss Illinois’ TonightDiana Carson of Olympia Fields, Miss Thornton Township, will compete with 29 other young women for the title of Miss Illinois of 1978 this weekend.The Miss Illinois pageant will be held today, tomorrow and Saturday in Aurora at the newly renovated Paramount Arts center.Illinois’ winner will join the other 49 state winners in Atlantic City in September to compete for the title of Miss America. Every year, more than $2 million in scholarships is awarded to the national, state and local contestants. In 1978, the local pageants of Illinois awarded $49,190 in scholarships to their contestants, an average of more than $1,600 per local pageant. Tomorrow night the groups will reverse competitions. On Saturday night, the top ten contestants will compete in all three divisions, from which the new Miss Illinois will be selected. In the Miss America pageant and all its state and local preliminaries talent counts 50 per cent of all the points a contestant may receive.
