Harvey Babe RuthDon’s Trips Tomchaney In Divisional BattleDon't Auto Body, the American division leader, again proved American superiority in the Harvey Babe Ruth league by downing National pacesetter Tomchaney Motors 9-8 in last week's action.Actually Tomchaney. the only National team with a better than .500 record, outhit the winners 7-5. but two e. rors. five passed balls and a couple of wild pitches proved costly.loosing pitcher Doug Mathey yielded just one hit after the first inning, but Don's never trailing after sending across four runs in the first.DAVE HANKINS double and Jory Downer’s single preceded Heulon Mackey’s long home run. and Greg Jackson's ensuing single, an error and a passed ball ran the count to 4-0 in Don’s favor.Tomchaney got two back in the second, only to give Don's a couple of unearned tallies in the third on two errors and a pair of passed balls charged to catcher Don Mandelkow. Mandelkow atoned for his errors with a three-run homer in the fifth that was part of a four-run uprising. But Mackey’s two-run single for Don's in the top of the fifth put the icing on the cake, even though Tomchaney rallied in the sixth.Hankins was the winner on a yield of seven hits and three strikeouts’ but Mathey was hung with the loss although fanning 12. On the season Tomchaney fell to 9-3. still a comfortable three games ahead m the National division.AN EARLIER 6-5 loss to Rube's Sportsmen still found the Auto Body crew with a half game edge over runnerup Harvey Cab. l,ack of control on the part of southpaw Greg Jackson was too much for the league leaders to overcome.Jackson hit two homers, scored three runs and drove in four and only yielded three hits on the mound. Yet one of them was a two-run blast by Rube's catcher Mike Koldziej in the third.Still, the score was tied 3-3 in the fifth, and then Jackson couldn’t find the plate. He walked Gary Wallerich, DuaneParham. A1 Morrell and Jeff Zapchenk. Kolcxiziej reached on a dropped third strike, and Mark Spurr delivered the game-winning single with two outs.Morrell was the Rube's winner in his most impressive performance of the year. Cornwall with two singles and a double, scored in every inning against loser Dan Chick.Rube's and the Coffee Break took part in an old-fashioned slugfest as the Sportsmen pulled out a 10-9 triumph with three runs in the last of the sixth. The two teams had 20 hits between them, and the roof fell in on the Coffee Break when Gary Wallerich singled and Koldoziej. Jeff Novak and Parham launched consecutive one-out doubles.JOE KEEFNER, who took over for starter Bill Cunningham in the third, absorbed the setback. Wallerich earned the win in relief of Novak and Mark Spurr.Kolcdziej had a homer and a double in the game, but teammate Novak showed the way with two singles and a double for the winners. Keefner accounted for the brunt of the Coffee Break attack with three singles.A five-run sixth enabled Optimist to get by Kiwanis 10-8, but the winners remained in last place in the National division.Optimist had only four hits, timely singles by Jeff Kaufman, Jeff Genovese, Bob Snuckel and Dave Wooten. The latter pair were the highlight of a five run outburst in the sixth.Kiwanis tagged 10 hits off the Optimist mound combination of Marty Grant and Vic Leigh. Don Randall was four for five and Jim Bradford and Pete Stupulowski both had three hits in a losing cause.
