Rod Stewart's holed up with his band at the Record Plant in Los Angeles, where he’s putting down tracks for his next LP A spokesman for Stewart said work on thp record should be completed next month and Rod will then embark on a 45-city U S. tour. The spokesman also acknowledged that Stewart’s label, Warner Bros., had refused to accept a double-live album Stewart presented to the company in June “They said they were waiting for a studio album, but they must have known all about it, because Rod had worked on it last year “It kinda goes like that, said a Warner Bros spokesman But basically we have no comment.’*Announcing the nostalgia band to end all nostalgia bands: the Grandmothers, a grizzled group of Mothers of Invention alumni — including such stalwarts as Don Preston, Bunk Gardner and Jimmy Carl Black — who’ve reassembled to play “the cream” of 13 years of divinely dissonant Motherhood According to Preston, part of the reason for the band’s formation is “dissatisfaction” with the modus operandi of progenitor Frank Zappa “Frankwould write these great songs, then change them to the point where they were real ugly,” he said “We used to ask each other, ‘Why is he doing this to his music0’”Back in the U S. after a rousing European tour, the group ‘ plans a series of dates this fall to support the original-material LP it’s currently recording, tentatively called “silicone Hump.” “See, this guy wanted to work for a mad scientist, but he didn’t have a hunchback,” said Preston, “so he goes to this plastic surgeon . ”Bas Muys, Ocki Heisens and Hans Vermullan really have a hit on their hands, don’t they? They’re the Beatle-manic vocalists of “Stars on Long Play,” the controversial LP full of 15-to 30-second covers of Fab Four faves and other ’60s singlesstrung together over an incessant disco beat The album — two chunks of which have garnered considerable radio and club play, as we as the enmity of pop purists — is the brainchild of Dutch record producer Jaap Eggermont. “Now you can dance and sing along at the same time,” says Eggermont, a former drummer for Golden Earring (in their pre-“Radar Love” period) Inspired by a similarly Beatle-thonic bootleg record, Eggermont cul-lied what he terms “rhythmically poor but melodically strong” material and summonded the Lennon-esque Muys, the McCartney-ish Heisens and the Harrison-ian Vermullan and other musicians into the studio late last year. It’s been nothing but guilders and glory ever since A tour is not in the cards, but Egg-ermont’s already cooking up his next hybrid “A little flower power,” he teases. Maybe the Jefferson Starship is interested.
