July 14. 1970Water CarnivalAt Detroit Lakes Begins WednesdayThe 35th Annual Northwest Water Carnival will be held July 15-19 in Detroit Lakes and wifi feature many events throughout the five day carnival, according to Water Carnival, according to Water Carnival Admiral John Quam.Included in the events this year will be snowmobile races for the first time as well as power boat races, a water ski show, sky divers, teen dances and the second largest parade in Minnesota with Hubert H. Humphrey as Grand Marshall.Here is a brief summary of events of the Northwest Carnival:Wednesday, July 15 The annual Water fight on Washington Ave. No. will kick off the 5 - day Carnival at 7:30 p.m.Thursday, July 16 The Annual Miss Detroit Lakes Pageant will be held at the Detroit Lakes Senior High School Auditorium from 8 - 10 p.m. Reigning Queen is Debra McCarty of Frazee, Minn.Friday, July 17 The first of three teen dances to be held over the weekend will be at the Pavilion from 8 -midnight, and all stores in Detroit Lakes will open for shopping until 9 p.m.Saturday, July 18 The Junior Miss and Mr. Northwest Contest, turtle Races and Frog Jumping Contest will be held in conjunction with a free kiddies picnic in the City Park from 9 - noon. A barbeque will be held from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. also in the City Park.The Minnesota Power Boat Association Races will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the city beach. Snowmobile races will be held from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at the City Airport and Motorcycle Races starting at 4 and 8 p.m., will be held at Cycle Race Park.The Horseshoe Tounament Qualifications will be held at Rossman Park from 1 to 5 p.m.The Prior Lake Water Ski Show and Sky Divers will perform at the city beach between 7 and 9:30 p.m. and a teen dance will be held at the Pavilion from 8 • midnight.Sunday, July 19 A Pancake Breakfast will be held at the Fairgrounds beginning at 7 a.m. and the Horseshoe Tournament Finals will begin at 1 p.m. at Rossman Park.The Parade of the Northwest, with over 100 floats and marching units, will begin on North Washington Ave. at 1:30 p.m. Hubert H.
