National Clay Courts Meet at River ForestTennis Club July 17 to 23The United States Lawn Tennis Association Clay Courts Championships tournament willbe held at the River Forest Tennis club July 17 to 23. As in other years when the big net show hasbeen held here, a large-scale organizational effort to prepare for it is in progress, and has been forsome time.Head man of the big tournament this year is Dr. James K. Betty, general chairman, who has been close to the mechanics of the meet for several years. His assistant general chairman is Al*-f ed G. Finlay. George E. Barnes will represent the USLTA in the conducting of the meet. E. J. Johnsonand Ralph Westcott.Wittleder RefereeOfficial referee of the tournament is Fred W. Wittleder. Mr. and Mrs. John F. Pilgrim will be in charge *of the official tent, Charles W. Lofgren acting aschairman of the committee onumpires, Emerson Houser in charge of registration, and Harry “Can” Leighton, club professional.advance ticket sale is being pushed by C. E. Simmons.The social aspect of the-tournament is important, too, and the hospitality committee of the club is being headed by Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Slaughter. The tournament dinner plans are being developed by Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Pickett.Publicity WorkPublicity Chairman Walter H.Brooke will deal with the variouspress, radio, television and motion picture personalities and agencies interested in the progress of the tennis action at the Clay Courts. Wayne Whittaker, himself a famed newsman, will assist in press handling, as wilT Warren Stevens, sports editor of Oak Leaves-Forest Leaves.
