WATER CARNIVALOPENS TONIGHTTHOUSANDS EXPECTED TO ATTEND 3-DAY EVENT AT DETROIT LAKES.tti1ilt;A large number of Moorhead and Clay county residents are planning to be among the thousands expected to pack Detroit Lakes this weekend for the fourth annual Northwest Water Carnival.The three-day program will be launched at 7:30 p. m. today with a mile long parade, followed at 8 p. m. by addresses by Governor Harold E. Stassen of Minnesota and Mayor John Queen of Winnipeg in city park. A carnival dance is set for 9 p. m. each day.Handicap sailboat races are j scheduled for 10 a. m. Saturday, with swimming races at campsitebeach at 2 p. m.Arrangements are being made tohandle a crowd of 15,000 on Sunday, when speedboat races on Little Detroit lake begin at 2 p. m. A water fight between the Detroit Lakes and Breckenridge fire departments is planned for 5 p. m.At 7:30 p. m. there will be a kiddies’ bathing beauty parade in city park, followed by the judging of bathing girls to select Miss Northwest of 1939. Miss BarbaraDriscoll, Glyndon, who was crowned queen of the Moorhead State Teachers college athletic carnival, has been invited to compete.Crowning of Miss Northwest isset for midnight Sunday.
