Painting celebrates black kindergarten• TOPEKA—A painting celebrating the first black kindergarten operated west of the Mississippi was unveiled Monday at the Statehouse, just a couple of miles from where classes 'were conducted.' The painting, by Kansas artist George Mayfield, commemorates the school founded in 1893 by Topeka theologian and reformer Charles •Sheldon,Attending the ceremony was Charles Sheldon Sudduth of Topeka, the last known surviving pupil who attended the kindergarten and Sheldon’s namesake, and Garrett Ward Sheldon, great-grandson of the once celebrated Topeka minister.The painting shows a group of black children standing in front of a sehoolhouse enshrouded by white clouds in front a sky-blue background. At the top is a white-haired Sheldon looking on.The painting will hang in the Statehouse for 30 days before being moved to the Kansas Center for Historical Research across the street.
