Carroll and Folk, Etc.etABr Mail anlt;1 Wire to The Consiitutioo.LaFayette, Ala., July S.—The account givet; in The Constitution yesterday, by your correspondent at Newnan, of the lynching of Waldrop is incorrect, as I have just seen and talked lo a gentleman who was present, and from whose buggy Waldrop was dr.ven to his d-atb. The facts in regard to his crime are well told, as also his capture at Franklin. It was at tirst determined to burn him at the stake on the sjot where the murder was committed, but better counsel prevailed, and ut 11 o'clock yesterday, surrouudtd by a crowd of men and women and just across the road from where the murder took place, Waldrop was handed. The crowd was numbered at 000people, but the excitement was not great. The lynchers proceeded in a very calm, but business-like manner to .io the work assigned them, while the poor wretch admitted the murder, bn! denied the charge of rape to the very last. The murder and lynching took place in Ciay ounty, Ala., about thirty miles above this pl*ce, at 11 o'clock Monday, as above stated. The pr.soner stated to the lynchers that a man named Hal. Mitchell, who had parted froru his wife, otf.-r.d hiui $75 to kill her. This Waldrop agreed tv do. In the same neighborhood and livia* close by was another man named Ah Mitchell, but no relation to the other Hal. Mitchell. Waldrop sas he was a comparative stranger in (bac section, and the names Hal. and Al. being so smiilar that he mistook the wife of Ah Mitchell for that of Hal. ana murdered her. He *aid he had never seen either l.utles, and meeting Mrs. Al. Mitchell asked if her name was Mrs. Mitcnell, and on btr replying that it was, he remarked, •‘Well, you are the one i am looking for,. i ___ • _ . _ ulll ..... M . . . . « .nd am going to kill you.” Willi that, he siys, lie made the attack with the hornble results too well known.Hal. Mirchell was at the hanging yesterday, and Waldrop seeing hiiu in the crowd pointed him out and said: ••You are the man who got me iuto this scrape; you of-frred me $75 to kill your wife aud 1 made the mistake of killiug Ah Mitchell’s wiie.” When Mitchell denied the charge, Waldrop went on to tell him and the crowd where the contract was made, wliat day and the full details of the transaction. Many present were inclined to believe Waldrop's statements, while others scouted the idea. When he was first drawn up the rope broke and he (ell to the ground. A minister vmu present, aud the doomed man begged him to pray for him. This the minister refused to do unless he. the prisouer, would take back what he bad aaui about HhL Mitchell. This he would not do, and ?uid that it was the truth and to swing him tip again, U3 he would uot enter eternity with a lie on hislipe. This report 1 g«*t from gentlemen who were present at the banging. It may or may not be so. As above stated, a large majority of those present were not in a humor to believe anything the dying man might say.Your Xewnan correspondent does the sheriff of this (Chamber*) county great in-i istice by reporting that he was present. This is a mistake, I know, because 1 saw and conversed with Mr. Finley, the sheri fl, several times yesterday, and he was in town all day. As for the other sheriUs reported present I am not prepared to say. It is possible they may have been present.Wa.'drop was a native of Harris county, Georgia, and has three living wives. One of them is the daughter of a very esti xuable farmer of Chambers count)% He was one of the worst men this section has ever produced, and the lynching meets wiih ihe hearty approval of everybody here and elsewhere.—W years ] weakn Vegeti E.
