Neakly all the monthly magazines have, of late yean, Inaugurated the pleasant cos- I tom of giving Illustration* of the different summer resorts In various parts of the Union. It makes plqpsant summer reading, but those who expect to have all their anticipations realized by a visit to some of the j ■ points Illustrated, will have to draw largely on their imagination, jnst as the artist has done. Harper's Monthly for August coa-J tains some admirable sketches of the numerous islands with which the waters of the coast of Maine abound. From Casco bay to Mount Desert, east of the Penobscot bay, and, In fact, aa far eastward as the bay of Fnndy, islands can be counted by the score, on almoat any one of which little parties can be found enjoying a pleasant sea- j son, in fishing, shooting, hunting, and in many other ways passing the time agreeably m a temperature some twenty or thirty de- j grees lower than any that can be found within the brick or stone walls of a city, j Leaving out Old Orchard or Mount Desert, there is not as much style prevailing as at the watering places south of Boston, but in everything else that make summer resorts j attractive, there is more—much more—than at any of the fashionable places. It is only of late yean that Maine has received that attention from summer visitors which the beauty of her coast deserves, but it has been increasing year by year, aa her attractions become better known. It is not on the coast that all her grandeur can be found} but up in the State for hundreds of miles, on the Kennebec or Penobscot riven there is scenery which will vie with any on the Hudson river, (except in the matter of fine villas), and the scores of lakes, miles in extent, teeming with fish of large size and excellent quality, are enough to turn the head of any disciple of Imk Walton.
