Barbecue, dance, play scheduled at PackwoodBy ROGER UNDERWOOD Chronicle Stiff Writer PACK WOOD— On the weekend of Aug. 1-3, the busy community of Pack-wood will take time out for some good food, good entertainment a nd good fun. The occasion will be the 23rd annual beef barbecue, which will involve much more than the 550 pounds of beef which will be prepared for consumption.Sponsored by the Packwood improvement Club, the annual barbecue has been one of the most looked forward to events in Packwood for years. With the lineup of events announced by Dave Bunting of the Packwood Improvement Club, more of the same will be available to local residents, both present and former, tourists and campers.Friday night, Aug. 1, a dance will be held at the community hall will feature music by Johnny Mullins and Eddie Music, and Saturday, Aug. 2, a littletheatre performance will be presented under the direction of June Rowland, along with an art show by BobSig}.Sunday activities will include more performances by the little theatre group and more art exhibits.The barbecue, Sunday, Aug, 3, will be at the La VTis Wis campground, as usual, and the master of ceremonies will once again be Hoy Baker.Proceeds from the event have averaged about 51,000,.and are divided equally between the improvement club and the fire department.In the past, the fire department has used its money for firefighting and rescue equipment while the improvement club maintains the community hallLast year, nearly 700 dinners were served, and the event netted 51,006, giving, the improvement club and fire department 5503 each.
