Rhinelander ManOneida County recorded one of Wisconsin’s July 4 weekend drownings,while a Rhinelander man drowned in Algoma Lake near Kesheena.Mark S. Barchus, 15, Alberquerque, N.M., drowned in the Willow Flowage Saturday afternoon while swimming with two companions. It was Oneida County’s third drowning of 1974.Miles A. Simmons, 25, of 633 Keenan St., drowned Saturday in Algoma Lake while visiting his grandfather in Kesheena.The sheriff’s office said the New Mexico boy was swimming with MikeSmith, 14, Tomahawk, and Kenneth Espinosa, 13, Santa Fe., N.M., early Saturday afternoon. The three started to swim out to Rock Island, about 70 yards from the mainland, but decided to turn back after getting about a third of the way out.Mark got into trouble and called forhelp. His companions tried to assist him,but were pulled under the surface andwere forced to let go. Other people onshore went to the scene and recovered thebody within minutes. Mouth-to-mouthresuscitation efforts failed to revive the boy.DrownsMark and his father, William H., had been visiting in Tomahawk.Three other persons drowned in Wisconsin over the weekend.Robert Zupancik, 30, of Okauchee, died Sunday afternoon when he was thrown from the seat of his boat on Okauchee I^ake, the Waukesha County coroner said.Chad Mikolvski, 7, of Milwaukee, drowned Saturday at Spencer Lake in Waupaca County, and Heidi Van Wagenen, 10, of Whitefish Bay, drowned Friday in the Oconto River at Oconto Falls.
