PAGE EIGHTEENFish Heading for DeepWater in State LakesBy THE ASSOCIATED PRESSAfter fighting some losing battles close to shore during the early weeks of the season, Minnesota fish are heading for deeper water — where the odda are better and the fishermen not so profuse.A number of resort headquarters this week reported fish out in deeper water, and the catches slumpingmildly. This was true especiallyaround International Falls, Ely, Walker and Park Rapids.Anglers generally had better luck with bass than pike and other varieties. Near Park Rapids, Walter Christenson of East St. Louis, 111., hooked three large mouths totaling between 13 and 14 pounds, and at Eighth Crow Wing Harold Strut of Elgin, 111, landed a 6 pound 1 ounce large mouth atBig Elbow.At Miile Lacs, however, fishing was reported better than average for July in the south section, and fish were said to be running larger than in early June.One of the larger catches reported was a 16 pound, 9 ounce muskle taken by Dick Pence, Whiphoit, in Leech Lake.INTERNATIONAL FALI^S—Fishing has slackened off after about three weeks of above'average successes. Fish are definitely out indeeper water.Anglers still are getting some big ones, however. Tops among walleyes was an 8-15 rod bender hookedby Roy Dudley in the fast water at Ranier Rapids, where Rainy Lake empties into Rainy River, Bob Christensen landed a northernthat tipped the scales at 12-12. He used a plug. Bass are running between 3 and 4 pounds.WALKER—Fishing is Just so-so, with anglers having to work harder for their fish. The best way at this stage to get walleyes seems to be to anchor at the edge of a drop-off and cact minnows into deep water. Bass are hitting well on plugs and some big ones have been caught on frogs. Crappies have moved into deeper water, with minnows still the best bait. Bigger fish reported the past week include a 16-9 musky, hooked by Dick Pence, Whiphoit in Leech Lake; a 14-pound northern caught by Bob Su-an, Dickens. Iowa; a walleye weighing 8 2 pulled in by Ray Whitacre, Chicago, in Hand Lake. FT .DETROIT LAKES - A 1225 fishing derby Sunday in connection with Detroit Lakes’ Northwest Water Carnival is expected to spur fisher men. More than 500 are expectedto compete. Anglers warming up for the event reported walleyes continuing to hit well. Top catches were reported in Detroit. Many Point, Lizzie, Wymer and Acorn Lakes. Alvin Kundert, Fargo, N. D,, brought in a walleye weighing 8 5. Wes Brink, St. Paul, hooked a large mouth bass weighing 4 5 in Pelican Lake. W. R. Olcott. Detroit Lakes, caught a 5-5 brown trout in Detroit Lake. Crappies and sunfish are numerous but on the small side. The same is true of northerns.PARK RAPIDS - Fishing slowed dowm the past week. Rest action came on bass, with anglers getting best results when fishing deeper waters. Weighing an even 10 pounds, it was caught by Lawrence Keppler, Ada, Minn.BRAINERD—Recent fishing contest entries have been smaller than catches earlier in the season Late catches include a 1-7 sunfish caught In Lake Edward by Russell Kutz, South St. Paul, and a 7-5 walleye out of Mille Lacs, by R. HartleyScott, Kokomo, Ind.ELY — Anglers in this area are working hard to overcome a general slump, but several of them have landed beauties. Small mouth bass are hitting better than walleyes. Jim Barbeaued, Chicago, landed a 17-pound northern pikeusing a 6-lb lest line and a spinning rod. It took him 20 minutes toland the big one out of Moose Lake. Ai Harrison, Peoria, 111., got a 13-8 northern and George Doremus, Peoria, a 7 8 w alleye out of Crooked Lake. Pat Markovich, St. Paul,landed two 3-pound large mouths out of Harris Lake.FERGUS FALLS - Bass pushed pike out of the picture in Otter Tail County the past week Five large mouths were entered in the local contest, but no walleyes. Rass were biting in Long Lake, north of Fergus Falls. Ten Mile, Turtle. Rose and Wall lakes The largest 5 7' j. was caught bv Olaf Olsonin Ten Mile.
