Large Crowd Enjoys Oriental Dinner EventSon' and daughters of that far away and colorful land of the Orient, Syria, weir charming hosts to a half thousand people of New Castle and surrovnding cities at a magnificent dinner and entertainment in the Cathedral Friday night.It was as far from an “ordinary'’ event as Damascus is from New Castle and was concrete proof of the fact that the Syrian Orthodox association of this city knows how to plan and cook a good dinner, knows hr v to entertain and knows how to g.t a good crowd together.Although the evening was entirely a social one it had behind it a splendid, noble purpose—it was a benefit affair for St. Elias Syrian Orthodox church. Needless to say, it was a financial as well as a social success, and the attendance surpassed that of the first Oriental dinner held at the Cathedral one year ago.Walter S. Reynolds was chairman of the evening (as he was last year) and Walter has a “way” about him that makes him a natural toastmaster. He has been in Syria, by the w'ay, and there were not many songs nor dances on the program that W’ere new to him. Mayor Charles B. Mayne was there as was Judge R. L. Hildebrand. He brought a message of unusual interest and held the rapt attention of his huge audience. Mr. Khoury is a distinguished, cultured and learned personage. The newspaper of which he is editor is the national Syrian publication.Coming back to the dinner, it might be said that every item on the menu was Oriental—and delicious. The Syrian names of the dishes, with explanations, are interesting. Here they are:Kubee (crushed wheat and lamb with butter).Malfoof (cabbage leaves rolled with rice and meat).Baitenjahn (egg plant stuffed with rice and lamb meat).Loobee* (string beans, butter, lamb rr.d tomatoes).Oriental salad.Coffee.Oriental cake: Baklaowa (made up of 40 layers of dough wtih butter between each layer and walnuts and sugar in the center with syrup).Ice cream.Turkish coffee.The committee responsible for the food preparation—Mrs. Kokab Orr, Mrs. Freda Abraham, Mrs. Nahwey Davis.
