WON’T STAND FOR IT*John Bielfeldt, Mayor of Thorntoa Gets After Motor Cops(From Chicago Tribune July 4)Characterizing the highway deputy police as “cheats, flirts and pikers/* J S. Bielfeldt, president of the village of Thornton, scatlngly denounced them and threatened sweeping arrests of deputies in the event of further encounters between them and citizens of Thornton.President Bielfeldt’s outburst is occasioned by the arrest of his son, George, by deputy sheriffs. As a result of the battle and the consequent charges and counter charges, First Assistant State’s Attorney Edgar A. Jonas announced that all concerned will be summoned to his office and a complete investigation of the matter begun.“The county highway deputies make more noise, disturbance and trouble along the roads,” said President Bielfeldt, “than any private individual in the district.“They come out to' Thornton to flirt with our girls, stopping them as they walk along the roads, spending hours with them along the roadsides at night. If a man’s automobile tail light burns out, the deputies stop him and offer him a new bulb for 75 cents, when they can be obtained for 35 or 40 cents at any garage. If he refuses to buy at that price, he is placed under arrest. If a man uses bright headlights, even legitimately, they arrest him. They disturb our village by running around with mufflers cut out.“We are ready for any investigation, and have a mass of specific evidence,” concluded Bielfeldt, “our local authorities have decided to take a stand against these deputies.”Harold Denman, a deputy highway sheriff and son of Maj. Albert Denman, chief of the force, waa the center of thfe battle and according to Mr. Bielfeldt will be arrested for disorderly conduct for his share of the disturbance, if he enters Thornton township.
