Lee was drunk and had threatened the Uvea of several people. Massey went to arrest him and the negro flred at close range. His first shot struck the officer In the stomach. As the latter fell he drew his revolver and fired. Lee ran half way across the street and turned, and the two men then flred several shots at each other. Th# negro was shot in the breast. He escaped but was tracked by a trail of blood and captured. ......... «n 'iEvansville, Ind., July 6.-—Twenty-five policemen twice prevented a lynching at the jail in this city early Sunday, but their bravery was Dotsufficient to avert a bitter race war between the negroes and the white mobs that sought the life of Lee Brown, the negro slayer of Patrolman Louis N. Massey. The mobs smashed down iron gates and were part way Into the jail before they were repulsed by the policemen. Their efforts tolynch Brown aroused the enmity of thenegroes of the city, who gathered about the jail in the afternoon andmade a threatening demonstration, declaring they would defend Brown's lifeat all ha/.atds. The negroes were j chased away bv a crowd of white men.Bent on revenge, a party of negroes broke into a hardware store and secured a quantity of arms, This actled to a renewal of hostilities and in a determined onslaught three negroes were wounded and a white boy of the name of Logan fatally wounded. Massey is dead from the result of being shot by Lee Brown, a negro. The officer made a game fight for life. Two minutes before he diedhe told his wife and child, who sat by his side, that he was going to get well. He had scarcely finished the sentence when he groaned and fell back dead. There is universal grief throughout the city on account of the officer's ueath. He ranked high in the Masonic fraternity. He was well liked by everyone in the city. He had been connected with the police department for more than twenty years. Brown, the negro murderer, showed no signs of regret when told that the officer wa.4 dead. There is much bitter feeling in the city agatnat worthless negroes.In a Mad Onslaught Upon the Jail Seven Persons Were Killed ByFire From Guards.Governor Durbin Has Been Appealedto to Declare MartialLaw There.Evansville, Ind., July 7.—A reign of terror exists here. The police are powerless, while there are grave fears that even the local company of militia which has been on patrol duty under instructions from Governor Durbin since Thursday night may be swept away by the mob. In a clash between citizens and the militia last night seven persons were slain and twenty wounded. The mob refusing to believethat the negro, Brown, held for thekilling of Patrolman Massey, had been removed to Vincennes, stormed the jail. With orders to shoot to kill, the militia on guard repulsed the onslaught with a deadly fire and seven members of the mob fell dead, whilemany were wounded. Four soldierswere shot. Governor Durbin has been asked to take immediate and decisive action, and it is not unlikely that martial law will be declared in Evansville.The police admit their inability to cope with the situation, while the angeredmob is threatening to overpower the militia. The negroes are panic-stricken and all but the most bold and desperate are leaving the city in wagons and on foot. The exodus has almostdepopulated Bap:istovvu, the negroquarter.The Dead—Hazel Allman, sixteen years old. shot in the heart; Ed Kuhl, twenty-two years old. shot in the back; Ed Schiffman, twenty-eight years old,shot in the head and back; August Jourdan, twenty five years old, shot in the head and back; Fred Happier, fifteen years old. shot in the side; Unnamed man, middle aged, shot in the back; John P. Feris, forty-eight years old. Theodore Bee, twenty years old, will die. Bottoms was arrested at Pendleton as he was about to board a train for the East.
