SAN SABA’S FIRST RODEO. A SUCCESSGood Attendance, Good Shows, Interesting Parade, Novel Features, Mark Jaycees’ First Effort; Expect to “Break Even'* or Better.San Saba's First Annual Jayce Rodeo is now history, the Fourth of July is past and now that the dither of excitement of the past few days is over, San Saba folks are again “getting back to normal.”The total attendance at the throe nights of the San Saba Rodeo^ i'J estimated at between 4,000 and 4,500 by Hudson Kelley, president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Latest figures of receipts and expend! tures indicate a “horse race” between income and out-go, with in dications that “income” will beat “out-go” by a “nose.”However, the Junior Chamber boy.* arc well satisfied to “break even ’ on this, their first effort to give San Saba a rodeo, particularly in view of the fact that most all comments by patrons indicated that everyone was well pleased with the entire show, from start to finish. And another one, bigger and better, will be staged by the Jaycees next year, President Kelley said yesterday.Parade Thursday and Saturday The affair opened with a grand parade Thursday afternoon which was dampened somewhat by the threat of rain, preventing a number from taking part. It was ncverthe less a colorful affair and hundreds, stood in the shower to watch it go by, led by Sheriff Doran and Deputy Huts Owen, preceded by flag bearers.Behind them were Mrs, T. A. Murray, Jr., chosen Queen of the Rodeo, and Mayor H. D, Chadwick, followed by a colorful retinue of cowgirls, cowboys, ancient hacks filled with ladies and men garbed in the attire of fifty years ago and various novelty features, including youthful girls and boys on Shetland ponies attired in the regalia of the cow country. During the parade the Gull Sound Truck on Court House Square regaled the spectators with music and announcements.Again on Saturday afternoon parade of the cowgirls and cowboys was held but it too was dampened by the threat of rain.However, the rodeo Thursday night with clearing skies, brought out a large crowd to Rogan Field, which all but taxed its capacity and there witnessed under the flood lights one of the best all-around rodeo performances to be seen in all West Texas. The show opened with a Grand Entry, with Jack Hoey of San Antonio, one of the best rodeo announcers in Texas, broadcasting the events as they transpired over the Gulf sound truck.Over 60 horseman and women par ticipated in the colorful Grand Entry and San Saba’s girl riders went thru the paces with skill and finesse, like the. veteran cowhands, who vied for prixcs in the contests.An interesting feature the opening night was the crowning of ttr Rodeo Queen, Mrs. Lominta Yates Murray, attended by 12 Ladies in Waiting, mounted, by J. Hudson Kel ley, president of the Junior Chamber, in a colorful ceremony, Mrs. Murray’s “crown” was a handsome new ten-gallon hat, the gift of the Jaycees.Another added feature was the Flag Race between local cowgirls and out of town cowgirls, which prov ed exciting and colorful.
