billfold: ‘What do you want? Give me some money. Get out of here.’ It ain’t like that up here. Most of the time you gotta yell at somebody if you want something.“I just don’t want to impose myself on anybody so I just sit here and if they want something they yell at me. There’s strictly no arm-twisting. I’m not a salesman. You’ve gotta make up your own mind.”Savage SalvageVirginia Visker, who has managed shops in the mall and the mall itself since 1978, owns Savage Salvage. “I’m going more for the Levi/leather crowd this time,” she said. Her store offers licensed Har-ley-Davidson products T-shirts, belt buckles, patches and hats — as well as jeans, jackets, incense and other stuff. “I kind of have a hodge podge of a lot of things you see on the street, except for Polo shirts and Izods,” said Visker, who admitted only to being in her mid-30s.The sign hanging outside the door features a deer skull that was a “shop-warming” gift from a friend. She also sells bones of raccoons, coyotes, foxes and other animals.“A woman in Ottumwa who is into native American animal spirituality picks up roadkill and does the treatment thing with them,” she said. She’s into preserving what she can. She doesn’t trap.”Hall Mall “is the last relic, I would say, of the ’60s revolution in Iowa City. I think it’s kind of the ghetto of Iowa City business, actually, because it’s cheap to rent up here. It draws a lot of street people, not homeless, butyou know, just people who have a street sensibility, people who like to get out of the regular mall mainstream.”Fancy Schmancy Before Jo Miner opened her shop, Fancy Schmancy, she designed capes and sold them in a Hall Mall shop owned by another woman. When that store closed, “I had this tempo going and I couldn’t stop.”Now Hiner, a 66-year-old greatgrandmother, sells her capes and other unique clothes she has designed. She buys silk from California, then paints it and creates clothing.SOMETIMES PEOPLE come to her with ideas for outfits, other times she just makes things and puts them on the rack. Some pieces are made from a several yards of fabric. Others are recycled clothing with her own special touches. “The material just kind of calls out to me.”SHOCKHeavy Duty..........................Gas Heavy Duty..................Premium Gas ................PV4 Gas Truck.....................Gas Strut Cartridge.............We Bought 8000 SHOCKS and nA' carry a lifeti“A TRADITION OF GHHOURS MON-THUR CARDS FIRES!381 HAWKEYE DOWNS
