Attendance reports from the various centers of the School Parks Summer Recreation Pro gram indicate that previous rec ords will be surpassed. Over one hundred aspirants are registered for the track pro gram at Gerstmeyer. There is a registrant from Clinton and others from various parts of Vigo County. Tennis instruction at Rea Park, Collett Park, Washington Park, Terre Town, Glenn Home, McLean and Woodrow Wilson is attracting many youngsters. However, the Franklin and Hon ey Creek sessions have failed to attract enough youngsters to continue. Those interested in these areas are urged to attend centers for tennis instruct General recreation at Collett Park will include a morning session each weekday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. as well as from 1-4 in the afternoons. Ot ter Creek will continue base ball and softball in the after noons, but the morning program will be discontinued. Davis Park will have general recreation each day from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The evening program at Honey Creek will be discontin ued, but the afternoon sessions will continue. Maryland will have an evening program from 5 to 7 p.m. as well as the morning program. At Collett Park, Cheryl Thom as placed first in the Hobby Show with her collection of shells, Debbie Chaney with her dog and horse statues was sec ond, and Sadie Koester with a rock collection placed third. These awards were based on originality. For detailed work in the collections, Pat Chaney and Jeff McKensie tied for first with horror statues, Martha Swearingen with paint-by-num ber pictures, and Trixy Swearin gen with fashion designs were second and third. Georgia Koes ter received honorable mention with her doll collection. At Washington Park, Philip Gordon placed first in this week’s horseshoe contest with Robert Mayberry and Harold Jones coming in second and third. Two volleyball teams have been organized by Ed Rus sell and some lively competi tion is expected. Members of are A include Harold Allen, Leroy Smith, Larry Wood, Da vid Southern, Charles Washing ton, and Pat Edwards. Members of Team B are: Walter Gordon, Pete Spence, Arthur Givens, Herbert Allen, James Wickware and Keith Miles. The girls at Turner House were guests of the Shriners at the Shrine Circus on June 24. The children at Memorial Park held a bicycle decorating con test as a prelude to the 4th of July. Rose-Herz Park is buzz ing with youngsters playing tetherball, croquet, horseshoes, softball, volleyball and other games. Craft activities are en joyed on Tuesdays and Thurs days. The best players in the boys’ division at Collett Park this week were Jim Swander and El ton Esperin. In the girls’ group at Collett Courts, Susie Torgony, Mary Rodrigues and Diane Miles made the best showing. In the mixed doubles, the out standing team was Nikki Cor ridan and Dick Benjamin. The Park Department has the clay courts at Collett and at Wash ington Parks in fine shape. Ten nis instruction will be increased at Washington with the tennis instructor there on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thurs day afternoons. At the Glenn baseball center, the Tigers, under the leader ship of Jerry Nicosin, has moved into the lead in the six club league with two wins. The Giants and the Dodgers each have two wins and a loss, the Reds and White Sox have a win and loss while the Cards have yet to win. Leading hitters for the week are Steve Little of the Tigers, Ben Tucker of the White Sox, Doug Pitts and Jerry Nico sin of the Tigers, Leroy Hen drix of the Cards, Frank Riggs of the Giants and Mark Mc Clintock of the Dodgers. Next week at Glenn, the Dodgers battle the Reds on Monday morning, on Tuesday the Giants meet the Tigers, on Wednesday the Cards are scheduled to play the White Sox, on Thursday the Dodgers and the Giants play, and Friday a double-header is planned, the first game to be at 8:30 and the second at 10:00 fea turing the Tigers and White Sox. At the Otter Creek baseball center, games are scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. On Monday the White Sox will play the Orioles, Tuesday the Tigers and White Sox play, on Wednesday the Orioles and Tigers are sched uled, on Thursday the Orioles meet the White Sox, and on Fri day a softball game is sched uled. The croquet champion of the younger group at Rankin was Steven Morris, with Stanley Powell and Steve Cuvelier plac ing second and third. Among the oldsters, Darrell Johnson took top honors, with Connie Houpt second, and Ricky Brown third. Fritz Ferris was the tetherball champion at Rankin, with Ralph Stott taking second paace hon ors, and Gary Watson third. The Terre Town softball team de feated the Rankin group last week with a score of 5-1. At Consolidated the past week a tetherball tournament was held. First place was awarded to Jim Barton, second place to Bruce Ripy, and third place to Mark Barton. Winning wiffleball captains the past week were Donald Kasemeyer, Orville Rogers, John Garred and Joyce Ellingsworthy. A cro quet tournament is planned at Consolidated next week. At Montrose during the past week, a croquet tourney was held. Winners were first place, Jim Jeffers; second place, Jerry Jeffers, and third place, Mark Ferency. Next week a tether ball tourney will be held. Win ning softball captains at Mont rose were Ted Brady, Danny McDowell, Ernie Scott and Ed die Arnold. Winners of a tetherball tour ney at Sarah Scott for boys un der twelve were Rick Doyel, first; Walter Slater, second, and Rick Motz, third. For boys over thirteen Rick Daugherty was first; Willard Speck, second, and Steve Gerrard, third. At South Center, Darrell Conklin was the champion in a series of checker games. A bowling tournament is in progress at South with win ners to be announced later. Activities at the Thornton Center are scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. on Mondays, Wednes days and Fridays and include kick ball, tetherball, softball, re lays, croquet, diffel ball. Win ners will be determined in each of these. The same activities will be scheduled at Sugar Grove on Tuesdays and Thurs days, 9 to 11 a.m. Draft activi ties are on Mondays at Thorn ton and Tuesday at Sugar Grove. Tournaments were started last week at McLean in base ball, croquet and tetherball. The baseball tourney includes base running, accuracy throw, and distance throw. A softball team is being organized at the McLean Center. Tennis instruc tion is available at McLean on Tuesday and Thursday morn ings. At the Davis Park cen ter, Mary Ann Gilbert was the first place winner in a Hobby Show with her post card collec tion. Scott Showmaker was sec ond with a rock collection and Jeanne Therest Decker was third with another rock collec tion. In a tetherball tourney at Fairbanks center, Pam Smith was the champion of the girls with Katherine Stewart and Teresa Stewart placing second and third. Bill Tennis was the champion of the boys’ group with Steve Long second, and Carlton Smith third. Winners of the girls’ croquet tourney at Fairbanks were Pam Smith, first, Katherine Stewart finished second and Mary Joe Stewart was in third place. Winners in the boys’ croquet tourney were Bill Tennis, Bill Hoffman and Todd Smith finishing in that order. On Friday, June 26, at the Crawford center, Art Nasser’s Dodgers defeated Joh Myer’s Yankees, 18-1. Home runs were hit by Mick Love, Steve Shim mel, Don Hauk and Ralph Gir ton (who had two round-trip pers). Mike Petit umpired the game and Frank Crist was the scorekeeper. Captains from next week’s game will be Don Hauk and Fred Rogers. Vicci Rich ards, supervisor of the play ground at Crawford is holding a story hour each afternoon for the younger boys and girls. This week they are reading “The Wizard of Oz.” At the Fayette center, awards for the PEt Show went to Lau rene and Florene Meddle with their dog, ‘‘Pug;” second place to John and Alice Francis with their dog, ‘‘Midnight;’”’ Bobby Pasko was third with his dog, “Sport.”” Peggy Lawson was in fourth place with her dog, “Buckwheat,” and fifth place to Barbara Olinger with her squir rel monkey, ‘‘Bozo.”” On Thurs day night a rhythms night will be held at Fayette. Vicci Rich ards has been teaching folk pat terns and these were presented to the rest of the group. Four races were held at Cruft last week with the children di vided into four age classifica tions. First place winners were Bobby Brown, Bruce Furr, Janice Mickschl, and Bob Smith. Second place winners in the respective groups were Tommy Brown, Bobby Mick schl, Kim Moody and Patty Michkschl. Third place winners were Leonard Foss, Randy King, Virginia Johnson and Rick Barnett. Cruft will have a Doll Show Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Thirty-five dolls were entered in the Sandison Doll Show. First place winners in the seven cate gories were Terri McDaniel, Christine Frise, Charlotte Low ery, Kathy Foot, Susanne Cassi dy, Sherry Kelley and Janet Nicosin. Second place ribbons were awarded to Donetta Wil liams, Julie Ann Flesher, Peggy Lowe, Sheryll Shattuck, Pam Phillips, Debbie Kessler and Donna Gormany. Third place winners were Anna Marie Ger main, Vicki Emery, Denise Kreyling, Mary Bennett, Janice Frise, Terry Phillip, Kathy Priest and Mary Fries. Bill Walls was the badminton cham pion of Sandison with Benny Blocksom and Tom Taylor com ing in second and third. Tues day at 9:30 a.m. a Pet Show will be held at Sandison. Norman Stultz at Concannon divided the participants into three age groups for the cro quet tourney. First place win ners were Bob Bricky, Steve Camp, Chuck McLain, and girl winner Debbie Bennett. Second place winners were Lou Couch, Dave Auten, Ray Edwards, and girl winner Becky McQueary. Third place honors went to Rich Silcock, Dave Nickle, Tom Mc Queary, and Edna Isles for the girls. Two age classifications and a girls group competed in the badminton tourney. First place ribbons were received by Dave Auten, Mike Taylor, and Becky McQueary. Second place Nickle, Tom Camp, and Debbie Bennett. Third place honors were received by Steve Camp, Tom McQueary, and Cathy Berry. In the Bike Races there were four age groups with first place speedsters being Lou Couch, Dave Auten, Ken Couch, and Gary Murphy. Second place racers were Sherry Brown, Steve Camp, Tom Camp and Ed Niedlinger. Finishing third were Jeff Vicars, Bob Bricky, Bob Silcock, and Tom Mcc Queary. In a wiffle ball home run derby winners of first place in the three age classifications were Rick Silcock, Bob Bricky, and Robert Heramd. In second place were Jeff Vicars, Melvin Barkley, and Ray Edwards. Third place was awarded to Doug Porter, Ansel Greenwood, and Tom Camp.
