One largely forgotten, though relatively recent, is July 10. On that day in 1943 the Allies invaded Europe for the first time in World War n. General Dwight Eisenhower led an amphibious invasion of Sicily. In the greater publicity and vastness of the operation the invasion of France the next year was more decisive and significant; nevertheless, the invasion of Sicily produced quick, dramatic results. Nine days afterward Rome was bombed. Six days later King Victor Emmanuel announced dictator Benito Musolini had resigned--he had been voted out of office. In 1934 Congress decided to grant full independence to the Philippines and though World War n slowed the process that freedom was granted July 4,1946, so that today Philippines share with Americans the same independence day.Orange Day is still observed in some places, on the 12th.
