PLEASANT — The 20th annual Fourth of July Celebration opens here today at 4:30 p. m. with the opening of rides and amusements and food sales at the Mt. Pleasant High School Stadium.Gene Hough, chairman of the threelt;lay event, called “Family Fun Festival,” said the rides will be in operation daily and instead of serving plate lunches all kinds of sandwiches will be sold this year.Tonight’s big event is a battle of the bands featuring 22 bands from throughout North Carolina. Hough said the event had to refuse entries after the first 22 bands and that the event will still run for approxi mately four hours.Ray Mack will be master of ceremonies and talent scoutsfrom major record companies will judge the contest.Top PrizesPrizes will be $100 for first place, $75 for second place and $50 for third. The winner will also receive an audition with a record company.Pre-school children will be admitted free to the battle of bands, as well as other events of the three-day festival.Groups entered in the battle of bands are:Ariin Tucker of Midland; the Scribes of Rock Hill, S.C.;the Shakers of Cherryville; Royal Dimensions of Gastonia; Swinging Sensations of Concord; the Centaurs of Mt. Pleasant; the Mind Garden; the Reigning Sun of Monroe; Surfer Five of Mt. Pleasant; Sound Generation of Concord; Decades of Albemarle; Doug and the Soul Revue of Concord.The Sin of Concord; Six Packs of Concord; Human Sacrifice of Granite Quarry; the Underground Experiences of Charlotte; Sandellers of Monroe; Louis and The Sha-dowsof Locust; Seventh Avenue Exit from Mt. Holly; Sound of Time; Swinging Playmates and Missing Clues of Lumber-ton.The Friday activities begin at 2 p. m. with a parade. At2:30 p. m. there will be an invocation, presentation of colors and the Pledge of Allegiance at the stadium, followed by the evening gown competion of the Miss Fourth of July Pageant.10th ContestantA 10th contestant has entered the pageant. She is Miss Karen Irene (Kip) Cooper, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd R Cooper of N.C. 49Miss Cooper is a 1969 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School where she was a member of the mixed chorus, Pep and Social Clubs. She was also a member of the county-widechoral ensemble and a member of All Saints Episcopal Church.She is sponsored in thepageant by the A T. Allen Fire Dept.Browning Bryant and Wayne Hauser and the Blue Ridge Partners will headline a “family fun festival show’’ at 4 p. m. and 8 p. m. and the final phase of the beauty pageant— with crowning of the queen after bathing suit competition — begins at 6 p. m.FiddlersOn Saturday, the rides andamusements will open at 4 p. m. and the East Coast Championship Fiddlers Convention gets under way at 6 p. m.There will be separate judging in modern bands and blue grass bands with the following prizes in each category;First, $50; second, $40; third $30; and fourth, $20There will also be old-time buck dancing. Don Cheek, radio personality will be master of ceremonies.All events are scheduled in the stadium. In case of rain.they will be held in the H E.Cline Auditorium.Sponsors of the celebration are the Mt.
