Country Music Is Ignorant: KentonNASHVILLE, Tenn. (UPI) -Jazz musician and bandleader Stan Kenton has joined drummer Buddy Rich as a persona non grata in the land of countrymusic.Kenton became an outcast with these words:“I hale country and western music. It is ignorant music and perverted music. As a professional musician —a jazz musician —1 abhor it.”Kenton, whose progressive jazz has been popular for 30 years, told the Nashville Banner newspaper Thursday that country music is “a national disgrace.”“I’ve waited a long time to say this,” he said in his dressing room at Cedar Lake, Ind., where his group was performing. “The country and western music is an absolute national disgrace and the lowest form of contemporary music.“Its a lot of whining and crying and I cannot understandwhy the American public is buying it. I guess because it is being crammed down theirthroats.”Kenton said he didn’t want to start a “revolution in Tennessee, but thought it was time somebody spoke out.“I hate almost everything Nashville stands for, the bandleader continued “CountryWmusic has no charm whatsoever. It is music for the masses.“This should be no secret. Just listen to the contents of the music, the lyrics. There’s nothing in them They have no taste.The bandleader said he “read somewhere that Buddy Rich has come out against countrymusic.“I’m glad he has. I agree with everything he said.”During a stop in Nashville ii^ January, Rich, a celebrated jazz drummer, said country music “appeals to intellectuals with the minds of 4-year-olds.• *
