M. # DIAL 648-2372 - BOX 398 - 1120 E #The biggest Fourth of July celebration in the area takes place at Capitan, New Mexico, starting with a dance to the music of the Aggie Ramblers on the night of July 2. It’s generally cool in the high country around Capitan, little dust, plenty of shade, and three days of activities for the entertainment of some 4,000 to 5,000 people.The main events will be the three rodeo shows with stock furnished by the Ratjen Bros, of Happy, Tex. This stock comes to Capitan in top shape, rough and ready bulls and broncs, tall added money in each event, a new saddle to be awarded to the all-around cowboy, bucklesgiven in each event, and a calf scramble for all the youngsters.The first rodeo event starts at 2:00 p.m. on July 3, with another performance that night (Saturday), starting at 7:00 p.m. The last rodeo event of the 1965 Stampede will be Sunday afternoon (July 4) again starting at 2:00.There is $50 added in bare-back bronc riding, $50 in calf roping, $75 in saddle bronc riding, $50 in steer wrestling, $50 in bull riding, $25 in ladies barrel race, and $25 added money in ladies pole bending. To date there are sLx lovely candidates for Queen of Lincoln County, the most in recent years. Their names are Wayn-ette Withers, Willa Marie Edgar, Connie Preston, Denise West, Rosella Kirkpatrick and Barbara Creel.This year additional bleachers have been constructed which add a lot to the comfort of rodeo fans. The Lincoln County Fair Association, sponsors of the Smokey Bear Stampede, with help from Capitan Lions Club members has been busy for weeks getting the rodeogrounds in shape for the July 4 weekend.The real big day is Sunday when a “mile-long” parade takes off down Capitan main street, forming at the high school this parade goes down Highway 380 to the main intersection and turns south to the rodeo grounds where it disbands. Following the parade is the free barbeque served around noon at the rodeo grounds. Lots of good beef and beans fill the plates of hungry people on this occasion. Churches in Capitan are holding services early in cooperation with this community event.The last scheduled rodeo e-vent will start Sunday afternoon at 2:00 and at the conclusion of this event awards will be made.The grand entry has been a colorful feature of the Smokey Bear Stamiede for several years when all the cowboys, mounted posses, queen candidates, in fact anyone who can get on a horse takes part in this parade.Rodeo headquarters are at the rodeo grounds this year, where Walt Jones will.be doingthe secretary work.
