Ouy Long.At that time there being in the vicinity of his home no church of {impr his faith, Robert Rogers, a devout j Im and God-fearing man, erected on his farm a cabin of roughly hewn logs and here he held divine services for hts family and neighbors, assisted by Rev. Venables. In due course of time a modest parsonage was erected nearby. A few years later Robert Rogers built the brick house, just acroes the road from his former home, where his grandson, Robert Renshay, now lives. The log cabin was forsaken and the brickhouse became a place ol worship aswell as a home. Now Rev. Mr. Venables and Robert Rogers, realizing that their homes were inadequateto accommodate the continually increasing attendance at their ser-r?c | vices, began V feel the necessity j inter for a separate and distinct house of tfatio worship. So Stephen Forrester, a Ford, son-in-law of Robert Roger*, dOrnated a tract of land where the rnt present church stands and a modest frame structure was built. In 1861this building, which was known asRogers Chapel, was completed and cob 1dedicated the same year. It may j ferct)be of interest to some readers to recall that Rev. I. C. Pershing, then president of Allegheny college, Meadville, officiated at the dedicatory exercises. In the beginning the church had a membership enrollment of fifty When Mr. Rogers died Le left a bequest of one thousand dollars to the church, five hundred to the church proper and five hundred to the Missionary society, with the stipulation that the principal should remain intact but that the accrument in interest should be applied to the work of the aforementioned divisions of the church. Later Charles Saltmer bequeathed the church one hundred dollars with similar stipulations. In 1882 the increased size of the congregation made the erection of a new church edifice imperative. So in that year the present structure 1 P. at a cost of $2500, was built and was dedicated by the late Rev. C. j L. E. Cartwright, who during his i Sar lifetime had a host of friends in the residlt; community. From 1905 to 1922 the Edmr Rogers Chapel cltarge was attached j ’in H to the Freepori charge, the Freeport Sund minister serving both churches. Be- : aginning in 1922, and continuing at the present time, Rogers Chapel ha* became a part of the Ford City jfo^ lt;eharfce. ~; ■In March, 1929. under the enthus- j 1 iastic leadership and wise guidance j of the* present pastor, Rev. J. A. Mclrrturfi, of Ford City, a movement was started to remodel the church. The Sunday anniversary ® service marked the culmination of• successful and untiring efforts on the part of the pastor anl his people and the beautifully renovated* i interior of the church was mute but 11 convincing testimony of the artisticskill and wise judgment of those in charge of the work. Rogers Chapel today with its membership of seventy-five (fifty of that number being resident members' has an active working organization, is an important factor in the life of its own particular community and has an influence which reaches far beyond I j the bounds of that community.
