MAYHEW_Times Living WriterTraveling from California to Missouri, searching for the right place to open his studio, John Johnston found that place in Northwest Arkansas.Melody Recording Studio opened recently in Fayetteville, offering a variety of recording services.“I had a well established studio in the Caribbean before I came back to the states, Johnston said. “When my wife and I decided to come back to the U.S., we looked for a long time trying to find a place to open our studio. There was a studio for sale in Springfield, Mo., that we almost boughtbefore looking in Branson. When the deal didn’t work out, we visited Branson, Mo., where several people told me about Fayetteville, Ark. After seeing it, I liked Fayetteville the best. It's the cultural center of Arkansas.Johnston’s musical background helps him with his recording business. “I started playing music when I was about nine, Johnston said. “I played bass and regular guitar before 1 got involved in recording.Melody Recording Studio, located at 2737 N. Drake, Fayetteville, offers a variety of services including, tape duplication, audio tapes for video projects and equipment repair. The Johnstons are planning to branch out into the Jingle market, also.“I’ve done extensive work in jingles before when 1 worked for the Bureau of Tourism for the United States Virgin Islands. Johnston said. We would also like to establish a good rapport with the localad agencies.Melody Recording Studio has a mixing console with all the latest sound equipment to match. Though he has no formal education in recording music, Johnston is the sound engineer as well as holding many other titles at the studio.I learned this business by doing,” Johnston said. “We didn't have schools for this when I started. Today, you can get a degree inaudio technology and leam in ayear what took us ‘old timers’ nearly a lifetime to leam. As for myJob here, I’m everything from the owner, janitor to the main engineer.According to Johnston, he has the most sophisticated noise reduction equipment in the state. “The Dolby SR has a state-of-the-art noise reduction quality that no one else in the state has, Johnston said.Johnston is aiming for one type of artist to serve in his establishment. “We hope to attract the market professionals who are really serious about their music, Johnston said. “Although, we are open to everyone.
